.45acp handloads

Hey guys n gals, got another question. I own a stock Colt Defender and want to know what the hottest handload you would suggest it could handle. My father shot a tricked out 1911 Colt and used 4.0 grains of bullseye with 200 grain heads I believe. He shot target with this pistol so stopping power was not really required. I still have all the reloading equipment and since I collected a ton of brass I figure why not reload em. I am looking for a happy medium that is kinda hot and won't break my gun. I looked for a chart but to no avail. thanks

    What type of powder do you have, or intend to use?

    What weight of projectiles do you have, or intend to use? Are they jacketed or lead?

    Hello I am a BULLS-EYE shooter so my suggestions might be WARPED why not shoot the same load as your father untill you become a better shot and buy or load one box of the HOTTER stuff to load for when you need it. This will do 2 things #1 save wear and tear on the pistol #2 let you shoot more and cheaper and you won't be bothered by recoil. if you are going to use for hunting "I would think there would be better choices of pistols" you will have to ZERO the hot loads but for a carry gun the point of impact at 25 yards or less between light and hot loads is a mote point .

    My favorite in a moderately hot load is a 200 gr hard lead swc with 5.8gr of winchester 231. With a 230 jacketed bullet, I like 8.2 gr of Accurate 5. If you really want to pump it up, you will need a stronger than stock recoil spring.

    Buy a loading manual, unless that is the only caliber or only gun you own. If you reload, you will want a good loading manual, and most reloaders have a couple.

    Even if you stayed with the one gun/caliber, you will end up with different powders, projectiles, etc. somewhere along the line.... A good manual is a great investment.

    BTW, if you are married, this will be just another of those things where 'you don't spend enough time with me anymore'. Mine said 'we don't do things together anymore' HAH ! she now handles the de-capping, and brass related chores..... worked for me.
