Ithaca Model 51is it a Problem gun ?
I have been told that the Model 51 Trap had some issues
with the barrel. The gun shot very flat and after numerous complaints,Ithaca literally bent the barrel on all the Model 51 Traps where it would shoot higher. This caused another serious problem of the gun shooting almost three feet high at 40 yards. Are you aware of this? This was told to me by two gun dealers yesterday. Also, you could not use a T&S Shell Catcher on the gun, without modifing the bolt or buying a new bolt from T&S. My question is: do you beleive this to be true?
Any
help here would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Susan

Sounds like a crock to me. You don't/can't "bend a barrel" to make it shoot where you want you adjust by modifying the sighting system. 0 -
well, yes you can bend the barrel to make the shotgun shoot differenty but that's pretty extreme. i've worked on several m-51's ant the only common problem i've run across is the gas system piston breaking (a $50 part from ithaca). 0 -
Bending a barrel would be unwise to the extreme. I'm not sure that perhaps they didn't mean something else when they said that and just did not express themselves correctly; otherwise, sounds like horse hockey to me too!

bent bbls eventually will bend back to the original shape. its called metal memory. yes the shell cathers were special for that gun. heck, just take the bolt lever out and put it in your pocket! just curious, did someone change the stock and put a skeet stock on it by mistake, or is it a m/c stock?

Shotgun barrels can be bent and back in the '60's it was a fairly common practice to get them to shoot higher than a field gun. I never bent one for that purpose, but have straightened several that were bent from hunting accidents and two that were bent by electric car seats. They bend much easier than you would think. However, I am not sure that I believe the story of Ithaca bending the barrels.
One of the common problems I have seen on the model 51 is the charging handle (bolt) will pop out and generally get lost while hunting. The other problem that I saw frequently was the action slide bars would break right where they joined the plate that held the bolt. They have not been made for some time and some of the parts are getting hard to find and expensive. In my opinion, if you want an auto for shooting trap, get a Remington 1100 or a Beretta.0
