Stoeger .22 B.B. caps
What were these used for and what are they worth. I just recently got 4 full tins of these. Also what was used to fire them.

I don't know their value but they were sold and used for eliminating pests where noise is a consideration. Fired in .22's of all kinds, however I don't believe they have enough kick to cycle a semi- automatic. Many people used them in residential neighborhoods to shoot squirrels in their yard or rats and other vermin with out attracting too much attention from the neighbors. CB caps and BB caps were once fairly common. I haven't seen them in years now. 0 -
I think snellstrom is quite correct about the bullet breech caps
(BB caps) and the conical ball caps (CB caps). Dont really know if
the very short ones are still made like they once were. However
CCI still makes CB longs and CB shorts. Both have little noise and will
not function a semi auto .22. As far as value, hopefully Iconoclast
will answer this but my guess they are of some value.0 -
CB Caps and BB Caps were invented by the French and Used in the German and French and Belguim Flobert Rifles of the Mid 1800's when Shooting For beer was legal in the Pubs of Europe. These Rounds were low Pressure/Blackpowder Rounds...Of Course the Sport turned to Shooting Rats in the Barn and Birds in the Lofts above the Hay and Corn...In Germany I have friends that still enjoy Popping a Dozen or So Pigions for a Pigion Pie....using an Old Belguim Flobert Rifle thats been in the Family for over a 100 Years...They had 2 of them, but was convinced by someone to have a Local Gunsmith Bore it out to .22 Short....On the 1st Shot it popped the Firing Pin/Breech Block open and put the Fired Case into Great Uncle Rudi's Cheek about 1" below His Eye...and according to Legend He missed the Bird also!...That particular Flobert is hanging above they're Fireplace..I've got a can or two of Both BB and CB Caps buried somewhere in storage...as Far as I know You can still Buy them....Ask <Iconoclast> He should know...He's our Resident Authority...and should be along shortly.....

As kids we shot lots of these, both CB & BB Caps. We preferred the CB Caps with the same case but a bigger bullet. As I recall they were a bit cheaper than shorts, longs and long rifle ammo. Some of the old junky rifles we had, developed expanded chamber rears from extensive use of these shorter rounds. I believe both Remington and Winchester made them then.
Dynamit Nobel makes them now and calls them 6MM Flobert Patronen (Flobert Cartridges)I paid $7.50 for a box of 100 of these BB caps a few years back. I found they stick pretty tight in a chamber so, after recalling the bad chambers of my youth I only fired a few and stored the rest.
We also had a Flobert target pistol that was self ejecting. A fired case could probably pop you in the schnuss if you fired from the hip
but we fired it at eye level.0 -
I've used them for years, and still do, in my Remington mod. 572. No problems with them at all, and they're perfect for sq's around the house as Snell mentions. CCI has them in 100 round boxes for less than five bucks.
Far as I know, Teak still hasn't completed his move but I'll send him a note and see what he says about the price of your tins CHGO, if you'll mail me the brand name.0 -
Hello, The CB shorts and longs are used by trappers to dispatch trapped animals. Used at close range and to avoid noise. They do not cause a lot of damage and blood.

The tins are red and have a round Stoeger sticker on them. All 3 are full and have no discoloration. Thanks guy's, working in the range at the PD I get alot of old stuff. Makes for a nice display.

Hey, v35, just for curiousity's sake, have you ever miked those 6mm Floberts to see what the bullet diameter really is?

About .220. It's hard to measure bullet diameter because only about half a ball protrudes from the case. The OAL is .350, case dia is .224 and case length about .240.
I also have a box of Hy-Score BB caps made some years back for Hy-Score, the airgun Mfr of Brooklyn NY. Their bullet is more of a conventional,conical style which measures .224 with an OAL of .475 and a case length of about .340.
About a dozen years ago I bought some loose 22 CB caps at a gun show marked HS, same as above, that were extremely accurate. I hit a standing crow at least four times incapacitating but not killing him
at over 100 paces using a 10-22 with scope. I havent tried the HS BB Caps because I haven't the crow problem here and the ammo is probably a collectors item. If you can ever find the HS CB caps, grab them. They are more accurate than the CCI "CB" loads in 22short and long cases. They're just the ticket for popping critters in the back yard.0
