1911 Slide Question

First off, I know very little about the 1911. This will become apparent shortly. You guys encouraged me a few months ago to go ahead and build a 1911 for my son and myself. I am about to buy a frame and slide. I see that there are Novak and Bomar style slides. What is the difference? Which do you guys prefer? Am I correct that the difference between the standard and commander's model is barrel length?

    Hello I think you mis spoke or confused about slide /sights Bomar makes sights but not slides. Go with gov. model slides they have more choices on slides .If you have not allready looked go to BROWNELL they are first rate people and sell good products there are some pitfalls to building your own 45 one area is in fitting the safty so it works as designed. another is locking lugs on barrel I hope you have someone who knows how to BUILD a 1911 to help you.If not you might want to buy one from a plain JANE SPRINGFIELD to a full blown from LES BAER or other gun pistolsmiths.

    My plan is to buy 2 sets of the Essex enhanced ss frames and slides. I'm thinking now that the slides are machined for sights and those 2 brands mount differently. Fortunately I have help. I don't expect the guns to shoot as good as some of the nice 1911s but I get a lot of satisfaction from just building things.

    The Novak and Bomar styles are the cuts in the top of the slide for 2 different styles of sights. The Bowmar is an adjustable sight. It is made by several companies to fit in this dimension cut. The Novak is the same deal and is a fixed, combat style sight. I prefer the Bowmar style because it is fully adjustable. A lot depends on what you want to use the pistol for. If is was going to build a gun, I would buy a mated slide and frame as an beginner is going to have problems in successfully assembling a well fitting pistol.
