STEVENS 5100 SHOTGUN SERIAL NUMBER?

I have a Stevens Springfield shotgun and on the right side of the receiver it is stamped 5100. Just to the right and below that there is a small series of punch marks as if someone tried to cover something up. Is that the serial number that someone has obliterated? Did these shotuguns have serial numbers? Thanks for any feedback.

  I do not think these had serial numbers. You can break open the gun and look inside or take off the forearm and look.
