.410 with bad bore

Hello, I have this .410 barrel with a lot of lines in it, and was wondering what would of caused this? will it effect the gun in any way?

    Hello rotaxpower...

    I am assuming that you are referring to scratch lines that run the length of the bore... is so, it could have been caused by shooting steel shot loads versus lead or bismuth. Only the shotguns made in the past 15 years or so were specifically designed for steel shot. Shooting steel shotshells in an older shotgun will most definitely have a detrimental effect on it... in addition to scratches in the bore, it will blow out the choke or ring the barrel right at the choke.

    When you say lines...

    Spiral or straight? Barrel erosion along those "lines", or just something you see when you inspect the tube?

    Quite often just a bit of lead fouling that can be removed with either a steel or brass brush. If the tube is eroded, then it's damaged and probably should be retired.

    Hello are you sure that the barrel is CLEAN and not leading caused by SLUGS or wad residue? I bet that it is one of these and not damage to the barrel itself.

    Steel 410 loads?????????? I've never seen any.

    Had a thought. Maybe someone used a stainless steel brush in it when cleaning.

    Thanks guy, the lines look to be running the lenght of the bore and are straight, I will try and clean her up and see what happens. what would happen if they dont come out? is it ok to shoot yet?

    Probable ok to shoot unless DEEP groves I have never seen stainless brush cause a problem but I guess it might happen . PS IS the ROTAX on snow mobil or race car?

    Nope... none of my shotguns are modern enough (my youngest gun is a Browning A5 Light Twenty manufactured in 1962). However, I have seen several guns come through the door of my friends shop that had steel shotshells used in them... the last one was a Browning A5 12 gauge full choke that was made in the mid 1960s, and the barrel was rung right at the front end of the choke, and blown out to near cylinder bore dimensions when we measured it with a micrometer.

    Is there any particular reason why you ask the question?

    Good morning all. Well lets see where to start, if the barrel is actually scratched, I would believe that a worn steel/brass wire brush may have been the cause, or one that was slightly bent, where the center of the brush, the twisted metal rods that hold the wire actually did the scratching. Is it safe to shoot most likely. can it be fixed, again most likely all it needs is a good hone job, let your gunsmith look at it.

    Steel shot in a 410, yes. Some of the Skeet Ranges now require non-toxic shot. So skeet loads are available. Hunting loads in steel for a 410, I haven't seen them either.

    Can steel shot ruin a barrel most definately. Especially full choke guns like Bert said it will open that full choke right up. If you have a modern gun with choke tubes it will wear those too! I've done it.
