M1A question...

on the SA M1A stock there is a hole drilled on the bottom of the stock towards the front, is this for the use of a bipod? I asked someone about this and he said that the hole was for the gas system and should not be plugged, is this true?

  a very large springfield dealer in louisville ky usually sells his M1As with a harris bipod on them . there are two different SA adaptors by Harris, one for the wood stocks, and one for the synthetic stocks, i believe the systhetic stocks are thinner in the forend area!!! to answer your question, yes the hole is used to mount the adapter to create a stud and then mount the harris bipod!!! i beleive the two adapters are a [#2] and a [2R]..

  While I guess that you could mount a bipod in that hole, I don't think that is a good idea.
  
  All USGI M14 stocks have that hole, but it's sure not for use in mounting a bipod; the jaws of the M2 rifle bipod clamp around the front end of the gas cylinder. The US M14 rifle, as well as all clones, has an open gas piston/op rod contact area; excess gas is vented into the area between the gas piston & the inside of the stock. Without that hole to vent that gas to the outside, you risk damage to the stock.
