Winchester Model 1886 50 Express
I recently started researching a Winchester Model 1886 my father left me. It is a 50 Express. I know that there were at least 3 50 calibres made. There was a 50-110, 50-105, and a 50-100. How do I tell which my gun is chambered for?

If memory serves, the only one really called the "50 Winchester Express" was the 50-110. If it says 50 Express on the barrel legend, that should be it! There are several guys on the forum (Winchesters Only, Bert, etc) who will likely have forgotten more than I'll ever know about this though! Wait 'til they get a crack at this one!!

The 50-110, 50-105, and 50-100 are all the exact same cartridge, just with different bullet weights and powder charges. Winchester manufactured the Model 1886 with a slightly different rifling twist rate for each of those cartridges, depending upon which cartridge was requested. The vast majority (which is still a small percentage of the total Model 1886 production) were made for the 50-110 loading. My bet is that your rifle is rifled for the 50-110.
The 50-110 (and its variants) were refered to as the "50 Express". The name "50 Winchester Express" actually belongs to the cartridge chambered in the Model 1876, and it was a 50-95. This difference in names becomes important when you get to the Model 1885, which was chambered for both the 50 Winchester Express and the 50 Express, and these two cartridges are NOT interchangeable.

That 50-110 has to be a serious shoulder cruncher. I made the mistake of firing an '86 in 45-90 in the prone position. It hurt the collar bone. 0
