Shooting buckshot through a rifled barrel

I want to buy a Remington 870 with a rifled barrel. I know these barrels are designed to shoot slugs through, but my question is: is it OK to shoot buckshot through them too. Will Buchshot mess up the rifled barrel?

    I don't think buckshot will hurt the barrel, but whatever you shoot had better be within a few feet of the end of the barrel. The centrifical force from the rotation will spread out the pattern very quickly.

    Using light loads it might work but rifling twist needs to be very slow or the ball will strip and not follow the rifling.
    Make sure you scrub out all the lead before you shoot full power jacketed bullets.

    I have heard what benzapped (Electrician??) had to say. I heard this from a defensive shooting instructor and also read comments on this in an article in Shooting Times.

    Might want to consider performing some barrel patterning on your own.

    Sorry, I didn't read it right. I thought you wanted to shoot single buckshot in a 30 cal rifle. Disregard my first post.

    been there done that, as harold..... said, you better be real close to the target. Once the pellets clear the barrel they spread quickly.

    I have the rem 870 rifled barrel, the brenneke saboted slugs work real well. The cheaper brenneke work just as well as the expensive ones. I shoot the 3" brennekes.

    Thanks for the input. Looks like I will have to try it and see how it patterns. I mostly use number 4 buckshot (27 pellets) because I need a little "patterning." I didn't think of the twist causing the pattern to spread different from a regular cylinder bore barrel.

    I think the buckshot is contained in some sort of plastic cup in the shell and that would keep it from leading up the rifling. But I am not sure if that is so.

    Anyway, thanks again for the replies.

    The "wad" will keep the pellets together for a while, about 5feet, after leaving the barrel. And yes it will keep the barrel from leading up.
