I'm looking for a new powder to load for my trap/sporting clays shells. I'm looking for something fast, lively, and with a long range. So far, I've only heard about Long Shot, but don't really know anything about it. Anything else you can tell me would be great. Thanks.

Hello: I've been shooting LongShot for several years now. Almost exclusively #6 shot for Iowa pheasants; and pass shooting band-tail pigeon in Oregon. I'm actually building a new #4 shot load this week. Longshot is fantastic! An extreme velocity shotgun powder in every sense of the word. If you keep your loads in the 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 ounce range you can expect 1450' to 1550' per second velocities. Excellent patterning with Longshot in the 1 1/8 ounce loads. Devastating results . . . breast bone penetration at 40+ yards. I'm recoil insensitive . . . probably way beyond the norm. Big kickers don't generally phase me . . . but when it comes to 1 1/4 ounce Longshot loads you will feel it. For a field load, I wouldn't recommend anything else. But for a trap load, I can't in good conscious tell you that Longshot would be your cup of tea. I shoot a round of sporting clays weekly, and routinely shoot a couple hundred rounds of trap on top of that, and I would not want to be using Longshot. I drop 18 grains of Clays powder, and run 1 1/8 ounces of 7's or 8's, and can shoot all day. In order to achieve the 1500' velocities with Longshot your looking at 30 plus grains of powder. My Clays load produces chrono results of 1250' per second which is more than adequate for sporting clays. For the heavy charge Longshot is very clean, but so is the Clays powder with half the charge. Maybe in some long range sporting clays applications, you might see some benefit; but I think you would be mixing and matching shells to fit a particular long distance shot. Then normal lead would have to change; and I just don't see it as being practical. Check out Hodgdon's Website . . . they have all of the Longshot loads there. Word of caution . . . follow their recipe to the letter. Substituting even primers, or worse wads is asking for disaster. Hope this helps! 0 -

I have been shooting trap for the last thirty years, and have used just about every powder that is available on the market today. The receipe that I have used for years, after years of experimenting with everything you can imagine, is 18-20 grains of Red Dot, in a double AA shell casing, Winchester 209 primer, and claybuster wad, with 1 1/8 oz of # 7 or 8 shot on top of that. It consistantly pushes out 1200 velocity with very desireable pressure.
And I think that is really the key to reloading, staying within the peramiters of what is safe, and still gettin the desireable results you are looking for.
Like I said, I have been using this load for many years, and most of the guys I shoot with, use the same load.
Stay with what works, and you can't go wrong!
