mdl 70 pre64'
got a tricked out mdl 70 done in japan in the early 50's or late 40's .lots of engraving thruout.like to know value[8D]

Pre-64 made Model 70's were not made in Japan, nor were they sent to Japan for any factory sanctioned work. Without a LOT more information from you, there is no way to say what the rifle you have is worth. You might start by telling us which particular sub variant of the Model 70 you have, the caliber/cartridge chambering (which can make a BIG difference in the value), the graded condition, and exactly what has been done to it. If it was modified out of factory, it will seriously detract from the value.

User: Way back when, late 40s up into the 70s, the military base exchanges, carried firearms, and you could even order specific models through them. I've seen some Winchesters that were purchased overseas by military personnel, and they had various local engravers, "upgrade" there firearms. Unfortunately, some did excellant work and were well known there. The problem lies with, "if it isn't factory" it's only interesting to a Winchester collector. If you can identify the engraver, some have quite a following, and some people will pay big dollars for specific engravers work. But here in the states, you would be lucky to get what the gun is worth if it had no engraving. Like I said some did outstanding work, keep the gun, use it or just look at it. But I would try to find out who did the work. Someone might be looking for a Md 70 done by one of the great Japanese engravers. Regards Dave 0
