    Reduce muzzle jump/barrel flip.
I have a Olympic (22 Short) with a similar feature.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

Does this provide somewhat the same function as having a ported barrel on a larger caliber handgun? Just doesn't seem like it would matter much on a .22.

HELLO AS TAILGUNNER STATED CUTS DOWN ON MUZZLE FLIP "HOWEVER" IN TESTING MANY PISTOLS ON RANSOM REST I HAVE FOUND EVERY ONE CHANGED THE POINT OF IMPACT AND ALSO MADE GROUP SIZE BIGGER THIS ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT IF YOU SHOOT N.R.A. BULLS-EYE 2/3 OF THE MATCHES ARE SHOT WITH A LARGER CENTERFIRE PISTOL IF YOU CANT HANDLE THE RECOIL OF A 22 YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE ON RAPID FIRE WITH 45 ACP. THE BRAKE LOOKS NEAT- BUCK RODGERS BUT MOSTLY FOR SHOW AND YOU NEED TO KEEP CLEAN ON THE INSIDE OR GROUPS GO TO HELL . THEY ARE LIKED TO COMPLETE GUN BY COLLECTORS.

those muzzle brakes were nice but as perry says, they do tend to change POI. the reason they were created was people wanted the 'option' of using them. before they were made, all the hi dollar guns had bbls ported at the factory (pre 57/8 m-100 and m-101) and people complained about cleaning them. so they made one that could be removed for cleaning or removed for good. also too, you have to be careful they dont reject your gun for match, for being over length. thats the reason all the olympic 22 short guns are ported the old fahioned way. with the new brake system, they failed the judges 'box' test for OL. they cost about 50.00 on the market and if its a trophy finish, its good to keep with the gun for resale value.
