Eddystone rifle?
I have found a rifle called Eddystone 1917 in 7.62 . I've never heard of them. Any info would be appreciated. Apparently the chap who owned this won several shooting competitions with it.

It's probably a US Model 1917 Enfield rifle. Remington made them at their Eddystone plant, & Winchester made them in New Haven, CT. They were chambered for .30-06. I'm guessing that it's been sporterized & possibly rechambered; there should be some markings on it.

Sounds to Me like some one in OZ had a Barrel Change...........Have you a Cartridge You can Mic?...Its that or We'll have to wait and see what some the Cartridge People like "Oconoclast" has to say....I'm sure You know the differance between the P14 and the M17...? P-14 was made in the U.S.A for Britain during WW1....in 303 caliber...The 17 was made for us in 30-06 and by several Makers...Eddystone Arsenal being one of them....and off to France We went....!Drop me a note if You need something further....I need to talk to you anyway....concerning the SQUALUS.....Best.....Captain Kirk

No Gov models in any cal but 30-06

By all accounts an extreemly robust rifle that can handle about anything you throw at it! There is and always has been considerable debate amongst American shooters as to whether or not the American Enfield of the Springfield is the better gun and both for sure have their own merits. The '03 is likely the better target gun as it is windage adjustable. People like Bruce Canfield ahve said they feel this to be the case and far be it from me to disagree with the likes of him; he has forgotten more about Military rifles than I am likely to ever know! I own and Eddystone Pattern 14 which is the gun that the 17 came from. The English government contracted with the aforementioned Winchester, Remington and also Remington Eddystone plant to produce many thousands of these guns as The English war production of Enfield SMLE's came up to speed. When these contracts ended, and the U.S. entered the "Great War" short of '03 Springfields, we decided to convert the 303 pattern 14 to use the 30-06 cartridge and renamed it the pattern 17 Enfield.
My Eddystone is not only a great gun, but one of my personal favorites and just accurate as hell also! These are both great guns and I would recommend them in a heartbeat! I hope yours is still in it's origial configuration, but if not, know that whatever it was converted to, it will stand up to the punishment. They have been converted to some of the most powerful magnum rounds available, and just kept right on going! Have fun, and enjoy the gun...they are real "beauties".

Hey Capt.! I think you got that arse backwards...the P-17 was made for us BY us in 30-06, and the P-14 was made by US, in 303 for the Brits! I'm sure that was finger fumbleitis anyway as I know you know the difference! Sorry...had to give you a "jab" on that one! HA!HA! Whewee! I knew I could count on you guys. i don't know the 7.62 spec's yet, cuz I haven't even seen the gun yet. I'm getting it due to the lack of proper license and registration by the owner. I should have it tomorrow.I guess US$70 isn't bad for a great gun. The rear sight is apparently missing, but I do have a spare 303 rear peep sight.Thanks again fellows. 0 -

Ummm...JC....Look at the bottom of his post. In his normal, thorough manner he went back and corrected his post to read correctly. It is customary to do that here on the Forum (I do this all the time when I make an error!) so that those who make the original post can refer back to the subsequent posts and get the correct info. We all make mistakes and the bunch of us are always poking fun at one another in that manner!

Thanks guys! (and girls?) I bought it for US$35 yesterday. It's a Model 1917 Eddystone and was rechambered and rebarrelled for 7.62 with a Parker-Hale barrel. less than 200 rounds through it since. Rear windarm is off and no barrel bands. Any idea where I can find this stuff? I don't even know exactly what it's supposed to look like as a target rifle. 0 -

In John Walter's book "Rifles of the World" he has pictures of a number of Parker-Hale "Target Rifles", i.e. these were adopted by some of the Commonwealth Countries for Sniping & target shooting. Although these rifles had conventional 98 Mauser Actions, I would be willing to bet if Parker-Hale did the work on your rifle, it would be very similar in appearance.

I got a few original parts for my P14 (the two interchange a lot of parts) from a company called Springfield Sporters (www.ssporters.com). They were really inexpensive and I got precisely what I asked for!
