External ballistics has always been a real confusing subject.
Generally the heaver the bullet for a given caliber, the better.? I think?

A very basic answer is that the heavier the bullet with the better more areodynamic shape will have a better/larger coefficient. As the shape or the mass of the bullet decreases the ceefficient will drop off some. In reality the only real effect of this number is to try to compare various bullets/calibers/shapes in how they will perform in flight. If you shoot long range varmints or targets this will matter to you sooner or later. If your target/hunting is under 300 yards, for the most part, then you will probably decide that it is all hype. Back when dirt hadn't been invented yet, some French Military Engineers decided that it would be easier to compute artillery ballistics if you could compare a new projectle design to a known standard projectle.
They assigned this "standard" projectle a ballistic coefficent of 1.000, and measured it's MV, time of flight, and remaining velocity along a beach on the English channel. This allowed them to work out the ballistic curve of the "standard" projectle under "standard" conditions (those that were in effect on the day of testing).
What you see presented as BC is the ratio of a projectles proformance aganst the "standard" projectle those long ago engineers used. This work also allowed them to compute the changes in trajectory due to tempature, humidity, wind etc. IE: your bullet loses velocity exactly twice as fast as theirs did, it gets a BC of .500 under "standard" conditions, it will also show twice as much "wind drift" as theirs did.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
BC,....a combination of a bullets shape, weight, and length, which at a given velocity, yields a measurement of how well that projectile can overcome environmental conditions,..specifically gravity (elevation) and wind drift (windage). The higher the BC,..the more energy that bullet will retain at a given distance VS another projectile of lesser BC traveling at the same initial velocity. the higher BC projectile will be both higher in elevation and drifting less at any given distance than will the projectile with the lower BC.
It's all about retained energy. Physics dictates that an object of greater mass,..even at a slower muzzle velocity, will retain more energy over distance than a lesser mass object. The environment acting on the lesser mass object,..effects it at a greater rate due to it's lesser mass,..thus the BC rating on bullets.
