Winchester Model 1901 10 Ga w/ poor bore
I have a Winchester 1901 10 gauge lever shotgun with a nice tight action but also with, unfortunately, a very poor bore. I have two questions for you wise people out there. First, although my instincts tell me it isn't possible, can you reline a shotgun? Second, assuming that is not possible, does anyone know where to get a replacement barrel for Winchester Model 1901? Of course I would prefer to purchase an original barrel, but I would take a non-original replacement if that was my only option. Does anyone know of a dealer who specializes in parts for old Winchester shotguns? I appreciate any and all input. Thank you.

Hello benny...
First question - "can you reline a shotgun?" Some yes, a Model 1901... No.
Second question - "does anyone know where to get a replacement barrel for Winchester Model 1901?" Again, No.
(you don't count questions so good [:D])
Third question - "Does anyone know of a dealer who specializes in parts for old Winchester shotguns?" Yes and No. Yes to most other models, but No to the Model 1901.
What you must first understand, is that Winchester did not make very many Model 1901s. Second, it is a 10 gauge with a short chamber in it (2-7/8-inch), and nobody is making repros of this model. Third, if you were to somehow find that "needle in a haystack" so to speak (an original replacement barrel), you most likely would NOT like price. Last, your Model 1901 has more collector value in its current condition than it would if you start messing with it. My recommendation... leave it alone.

benny: Not being able to look down the bore, to see how bad it really is. This is a suggestion, you can rehone the barrel. I've seen some barrels that look really bad, but after minimal honing time look like new again. It really depends on how much money you are willing to spend???? If the barrel can't be honed again, it can be cleaned enough to consider having the bore flame sprayed and then rehoned, or possibly plated, and re honed. These options aren't cheep and finding someone to do this will be hard. Of course the barrel would have to go through heat treat again.
I recommend finding a good gunsmith familar with Winchesters and having the barrel honed. These are thick barrels and you can remove a few mils and be fine. I do know of one gunsmith who would look at it and tell you if it's worth a try. Just click on Onlywinchesters to the left and email me for the info.
I saved a Md 12 Winchester duck barrel with the same problem, with about 45 min of hone time.
Bert is correct, there is no place to buy used barrels, you just have to watch the various auction sites and hope someone list one.

You might want to post a query on the cowboys bulletin board.....the Wire...at www.sassnet.com
Those guys have a wealth of knowledge on the old scatterguns. There are repros being made but I don't know if any parts interchange. My understnding is the '97 barrels interchange, but don't quote me on that.

Model 1897 barrels will NOT interchange with a Model 1901. The Model 1897 was made in 12 and 16 gauge only, whereas the Model 1901 was made in 10 gauge only. It irritates me to no end when people say (write) stupid things like this[V]. To reiterate, Model 1897 slide-action shotgun barrels are NOT interchangeable with the Model 1887 or 1901 lever-action shotguns period!

Bert not everybody is as sharp as you and I. LOL You think Throck was thinking of the Md 1887, and he made a typo? Still has a good suggestion about the cowboys bulliton board. Regards Dave 0 -

Hello Dave...
I suppose it is possible that Throck was talking about a Model 1887 instead of a Model 1897/97, but somehow, I don't think so. A few months ago, this same suggestion came up on a different forum that I frequent, and I had to step in and straighten out the misunderstanding on that discusssion. I did not mean to come across harshly though, and I sincerely appologize if it appeared that way.
Sharp huh[?] More like a bent s.h.i.t. can[:D]

Good morning all. After doing a little research. The Md 1887 czme in both the 10ga. and 12ga. version. Where as the 1897/97 came in the 12ga. and 16 ga. version, both in take down and solid frame. If a person had the money to spend, and I mean money. You could take a 1897/97 Solid frame 12 ga. barrel and adapt it to the 1887 12ga. frame. It would take a gunsmith who is real good in machining threads, brazing/welding, and familar with heat treating, and good at lay-out.
Here's how:
1)Remve both barrels frome the receivers
2)Remove the magazine lug from the 87 barrel.
3)Fit the 97 barrel to the 87 reciever, threads are the same, it's a matter of trimming, and getting the barrel to line up, and adjust the head space.
4)remove barrel and stress relieve it(ht treat)
5)lay out the barrel for the magazine lug, then braze/weld which ever Winchester did at the time. If brazing was used, you Ht treat before brazing.
Heat treat the barrel back to the original temper
6)Probably should do a Mag. Particle inspection of the chamber end and where the lug was attached, to insure no cracks appeared.
7)Reblue the barrel
8)reinstall the barrel
Those are the minimum steps probably involved. There may be something else that's needed. The point is you can do just about anything to a gun, if you have the money to spend. And know the people who can do the job. Is this what you were thinking of Throck? Regards Dave0 -

Throckmorton... Believe me when I say this, I did read and fully understand your ENTIRE first post. My reasoning behind my reply to you was simply this... If you don't have the FACTS, don't write out the reply... this is after all, the "experts" forum, not the "guesser's" forum. Intentionally posting misinformation (even when you couch it with "but don't quote me on that") is a wasted effort for both the person who posted it, and then for the person who is an "expert" to have to write a reply to correct it. That is the part that irritates me.
Now, I will point this out to you... it was never my intention to insult you or to start a pissing contest, and your latest reply is very much like "the pot calling the kettle black". If you had bothered to READ my next reply in this string, you would have seen where I appologized for being harsh in my first reply to your post... so, please take your own advice, and READ before you retort.
