What is the difference if any between the 8x57 cal. and the 8mm mauser.

    Some nomenclature fun for you... in 1888, the Germans adopted a high power, small bore, smokeless cartridge to replace the 11mm black powder round. Though the weapon was designed by a comission, the cartridge was a Mauser design, having a diameter of .318" or 7.9mm, with an overall brass length of 57mm; hence, a designation 7.9X57I, with the I standing for Infanterie; this incindentally appeared as a J to american eyes, which weren't and aren't used to gothic script, hence old 88 model rifles are often called 'I' or 'J' bore guns interchangeably.

    Shortly after the turn of the century, spark gap photography allowed pictures of bullets in flight, and it was discovered, with some surprise, that a round nosed bullet isn't ideal; the ideal shape is a pointed bullet. So the bullet was pointed, and for ballistic reasons, cross section increased to .323", hence the designation 7.92X57IS, or Infanterie, Spitzgeschoss (pointed bullet). Later modifications resulted in later abreviations, most notably the change to a roughly 198gr bullet up from a 156 gr bullet, leading to 7.92X57IsS, Infanterie, schweres spitzgeschoss, or heavy pointed bullet.

    Now as all this is complex, someone came up with the idea of just calling it 8mm Mauser, or 8X57, or 8X57IS, which aren't technically correct, but have become common practice.

    The 8x57/8mm Mauser is also designated as 7.92x57. All 3 are the same cartridge.

    The point needs to be made that the .323 "S" bullet cannot safely be used in the '98 Mauser made before 1905 or in the '88 Mauser.

    I have an old box of Norma Olympic match grade 8X57jr 196grn SPR. Where, or do they fit into the above mentioned catagories.

    Out in left field. They're a rimmed version for double rifles and drillings.

    Any man can shoot a gun, and with practice he can draw fast and shoot accurately, but that makes no difference. What counts is how you stand up when somebody is shooting back at you.

    The information on the 8X57JR ammo is excellent. I just acquired an Emil Kerner drilling with an 8X57JR rifle barrel. The Selleier & Bellot ammo I bought isn't impressive. The first round out of the box has a crease in the case neck, and others have visible flaws. I've been shooting large bore since 1959, and don't recall ever seeing a neck crease in new ammo before.

    Does anyone know where I can acquire some better brass or loaded ammo for this gun? It appears that Norma no longer makes it.

    harper, suggest you post this as a separate inquiry. I'm certain you can form the brass from something, but all my references are packed away somewhere in "warehouse" as part of the moving process. There are others on board with access to similar materials who could answer this question. The problem is more likely to be finding .318" bullets rather than forming the brass, but there are custom makers out there who can provide both. Do *NOT* invest in the Bertram stuff carried by OWS if you can avoid it. I'm not sure they make this one, anyway, but OWS charges "Blue Sky + 50%" and the Bertram products are noticeably inferior to US and Scandanavian makers.
