Marlin 1895 jam
My Marlin 1895 45/70 jams. The cartridge is not coming out of the magazine tube. It will start back, then hang up. If I take a small screwdriver, insert it under the case rim, and force it back onto the carrier, it will function normally.
Alternatively, I can bump the recoil pad on a hard surface a time or two to get it started. It may be 20 rounds before it does it again, or it may be on the next round.
I bought this rifle at an estate sale, so I don't know if it just started, or has always done this. It appears new, and came with the box and 1 full box and partial boxes of ammo.(40 rounds total)

At first blush I would guess a dented magazine tube. Also could be some dirt or detritus in the mag follower and coil spring assembly. A dent in the tube could be nearly anywhere, even under the wood so complete disassembly would be in order. It could be as easy as cleaning up the tube and ancilliary feed parts or it could require a whole new tube, follower etc... Due to the itermittant nature of the problem, I would guess that one of the two things mentioned would be the cause. Either the dirt/foreign bodies are floating in and out of the way of the follower, or the dent in the tube is binding the follower dependant on the varying clearance provided for the follower.

1KYDSTR Thanks for the suggestions. I took the mag tube off. It appeared to be straight. but very dirty. I cleaned it and took off for the range. I fired twenty rounds with only one jam.
I have loaded four different cases with dummy rounds. I am going to cycle them through until it jams, noting each time which one jams. I'm hoping it will be the same case each time. Maybe this Marlin has an aversion to a particular brand of case.
After that, I'll be open to ideas....

You are more than welcome! I wonder if in addition to the house keeping problem the former owner had if you are perhaps experiencing a Cartridge Overall Length problem? Are you by chance Dutch loading these rounds insofar as manufacturer is concerned? For that matter, are you reloading or is it factory ammo? In my experience with both the guide gun and Standard 1895 45/70, the feed mechanism will NOT take any cartridge longer than 2.57 inches. As a matter of fact, I rarely exceed 2.55 inches in order to insure feed reliability, and this seems to effect accuracy naught. If these are reloads, you may be encountering a problem with full length sizing as well. Some people just don't like to run the case through the entire length resizing die in order to insure longer case life; me, I do it everytime and just deal with the shorter life although with straight cases such as the 45/70 this is splitting hairs! To sum up, I would put the calipers to the rounds in terms of base diameter (around the web, not the rim), and C.O.L. as well; this may provide some insight for you. Thanks, I use only reloads. Perhaps that is the problem. I always full length re-size and crimp to the groove. I guess I will have to check the col.

1KYDSTR, it appears that you are a flippin' genius!! I checked my COL and found most of them were too long. I re-seated them to 2.55". I ran about 50 of them through without a jam. I owe you one, bud,,,
