ok, L frame is my final answer. k frame somehow reminds me of the K-22's. N frame is a M-25. its gotta be L frame. we had 200 of these guns in our armory and i just cant pull it back from deep memory!

Even though the "K" and "L" frames have different names, they both use the same grips, as they are the same in the grip area.

The older 686's were square butt.

Also could be a round butt, usually found on the short barrel models like 2.5".

ATF IS CORRECT ! IF THE BARREL IS 4" OR LONGER IT WILL BE A SQUARE BUTT L-FRAME .THE SHORT BARRELS WERE MADE IN BOTH ROUND AND SQUARE BUTTS .K & L FRAMES DO TAKE THE GRIPS . L-FRAMES HAVE FULL LUGS AND A
STRONGER FRAME I BELIEVE . MOST K'S WILL USUALLY FIT L'S HOLSTERS ALSO BUT L'S WON'T GO IN THE K'S WITH THE FULL LUG BARRELS.
