Reloads in my Garand
Are reloads considered unsafe in my M1 Garand and other military semi-autos? I have shot about a hundred through mine with no problems. I am very careful when reloading the 30-06.

reloads are fine. Just use a bullet lighter than 180 gr., and a powder faster than IMR 4320; there is no mention of an upper limit for speed but I would stay SLOWER than IMR 3031 as well. 4895, for instance, is a great choice. Use any published load data in this range and perhaps stay off of a maximum charge by a grain and you're good to go.

Small base dies should be used though not as critical in a service grade chamber. a go no-go case gauge is very helpful in preventing problems that could araize 0 -
As long as chamber pressures are kept at, or below, 50,000 psi, you should be OK.....although, of course, you shouldn't use lead bullets.
The specs for .30 Caliber Ball, M2:
Velocity: 2740 +/- 30fps
Pressure: 50,000 psi max. average
Bullet: 152 -3 grains
Propellant:
IMR4895 - 50 gr.
WC852 - 50 gr.
CMR-100 - 45 gr.0 -
military primers ( fed 209) are recommended for the m-1 and m-14
because of the firing pin design. i personally witnessed a blow-up
of a garand firing factory loads ( i was about three feet behind the shooter who was at the bench)
he fired a round and in the process of cycling it fired out of battery
busting the back of the reciever and the stock.
shooting glasses saved an eye that day. the broken reciever broke
them and gave the shooter a hell of a shiner. the case went everywhere
and i pulled two fragments out of his forehead myself.
i know this may stir an argument or two and i make no claim as a garand
expert, however i have been shooting for 30 years both civilian and military. the shooter himself is N.R.A. qualified as an instructor
in several shooting diciplines. he is also a master class law enforcement shooter.
all that to say that we looked hard for a mistake that we made or
a problem with the weapon and this was the only conclusion
we could find.

Ok Slowhand, I want to know how to get fed 209 shotshell primers in a 30-06 case? a garand when properly assembled with milspec parts will not fire out of battery. the bolt must be rotated into the closed position in order for the firing pin to have anywhere to go. maybe with a high seated federal match primer, maybe the boltface seated the primer violently which set it off.... which is a reslult of sloppy handloading.

Richbug: Was kinda wondering the same thing about using a 209
primer in a rifle cartridge..... Best and most accurate bullet for at
least the M-1 I found was the Sierra 168 gr.# 2200 BTHP Match and almost
as good was the old tried and true G.I. Nat. Match 173 gr bullet which
is almost, but not quite compareable in accuracy. Keep velocity down
to about 2550 f.p.s. with these. Two good powders I found were IMR
4895 and Accurate Arms 2520. AA 2520 meters from a good measure like
a dream, while 4895 (extruded powder) really needs weighing each charge.
Also liked to use CCI 200 rifle primers as they are a "hard primer"
and helps to prevent slam fires.0 -
