1876 Winchester Too Far Over The Hill?

Kirk (and others) here are some pix of the old '76 Winchester I asked about previously. Is it "too far over the hill" to be of any value to collectors?

    Hello Joe...

    The pictures really do not show enough detail anout the condition of the metal surfaces. What condition are the address, caliber, Model, and serial number stanps in? How deep does the corrosion & pitting go? The stocks look like they are beyond resurrection. I my personal estimation, that old rifle is borederline "relic" status.

    Thanks Bert, this is about as good as stamping gets, and pitting is pronounced, DEFINITELY NOT a 'shooter'.

    Thanks Bert, I was just advised that the stock was "as found and nothing done to it", was a different rifle I was thinking of.

    I've seen guns hurt worse than that get a lot better. You need a tang screw, repair/replacement of the magazine tube and forend wood repair. Heavier springs could well be useable while light springs like the magazine spring may need replacement.Soak the screws before removing the woodwork. After removing the woodwork, give the metalwork a month long soak in Kroil, Dextron auto trans fluid, kerosine etc. Dismantle the gun if you can and use a brass wire wheel on the parts. Use up a couple of oversize bore brushes and maybe spin a 410 or 20 gage shotgun brush in the chamber. The rifle and bore appeared reasonably sharp through the rust. With a bit of TLC, the gun might very well come out of it in good working and shooting order. Rust doesn't stop so try and remove it all without damaging the gun underneath. You could end up with a smooth light brown rifle with light pitting.
    Original western guns draw a lot of interest from shooters and collectors.
    I believe your gun will finish up a good cut above a wallhanger.
