17 rimfire cuts thru level 3 vest!
I was surfing aound and saw a sight where a subject proudly displayed a level 3 vest with three hole straight thru! he seemed to enjoy bragging that it will defeat any vest? is it the small size or those tips of some type of coating and if so why isnt law inforcement saying anything! I see that Taurus now has an 8shot 17m2 snub ...I dont know if the 17m2 will do the damage the regular 17 will do but the photo's looked scary for LEO ! Billy

Thanks for the site info. I've copied Chief Dave's picture over to here so others can get a look. Penetration of the vest is not a total suprise to me as these vests are not designed to stop sharply pointed objects. Many officers have been injured by ice picks, stilletos and similar weapons. And there have been some deaths. Also, these vests will not typically defeat rounds fired from high power center fire rifles.
While the author of the post did not say what their test gun was, it is important to note that at 25 yards penetration was only 2 out of 5 and the vest had to be move considerably closer before getting 2 for 2. Also there was no mention of backing up the vest with ballistic gel or clay block to illustrate the remianing effect of the penetrating rounds.
The 17 hmr is an impressive little "pill", but I suspect that the vast majority of it's energy was expended on penetration of the vest.
We use gel or clay backing when testing so that there is a measurable media to illustrate the post-penetration effectiveness of the ammunition being tested, and we'll have to add this to our "to test" list.

I would like to see this. The 17Rem will not even pentrate the vest. I doubt this is true. Like what Contender Man said; "what sight did this come from."

Given it's high velocity and small caliber, it wouldn't surprise me if the .17 HMR would penetrate soft body armor when fired at a very steep angle.
Concealable body armor panels are made from multiple layers of woven ballistic fibers that "catch" the projectile rather than stopping it abruptly like hard plate. Due to their frontal area/velocity ratio, many .22 rimfires are capable of penetrating more of these layers than .44 or .45 caliber projectiles. Simply put, they punch between the strands of material. However, when the angle is increased light projectiles such as these are more apt to be deflected by the material.
It should be noted that, due to this same phenomenon, soft body armor is not rated for protection against stabbing instruments, such as knives or ice picks. Even though they aren't guaranteed to prevent these, there are numerous cases on record where they've defeated such attacks.0 -
It would not surprise me either if the .17 does penetrate. It was designed as a rifle bullet. The vest (soft) are not rated for most rifle bullets.
Any man can shoot a gun, and with practice he can draw fast and shoot accurately, but that makes no difference. What counts is how you stand up when somebody is shooting back at you.

I'm not that good at transfering sites but it was on the rimfirecentral.com ..then I was looking at the 17 and it was on that post that I saw the vest & the picture...I heard a guy at the range saying the same thing ...saying the speed , small size , and coated tip lets it slip thru the vest....not a happy thought Billy 0 -

havent checked the sectional density of the .17 but if it holds suit with other small caliber bullets.. they do have a good sectional density and with the proper bullet they very possibly could penetrate the vest.... but this is all on paper... i'd have to see it to believe it ...

Never heard of RBR vests, have done my own testing on LII vest from Point Blank and LIII vest from Second Chance: no penetration of 17HMR in the Second Chance; only one round penetrated the Point Blank, and that was fired 5 feet away! I used a 2" Taurus belly gun and hung the carriers on a hanger in my shed.
