Any Hints for Browning A-5
After reading about the possible damage to the S&W 100 from a part failing due to time, I was wondering if something similar is the case with the A-5. My wife gave me her father's A-5 for a wedding present (he passed when she was young) and I don't know much about the guns. It hasn't been shot in probably 25 years (and not much even then) besides the few rounds I put throught it when I got it last year. I just don't want to damage it due to ignorance.

I HAVE AN A-5 THAT I HAVE SHOT FOR 40 YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS. JUST BE SURE TO KEEP THE FOREARM CORRECT. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY.

The A5 comes with RINGS in front and behind the recoil spring they can be STACKED in different ways instruction might be under forearm or get someone to show you also dont tighted the forearm all the way 0 -
The big thing with an A-5 is the positioning of the rings on the magazine tube under the forearm. They can be positioned in 2 ways depending on wether you are shooting light or heavy loads. On my 20 ga. there is a sticker on the inside of the forearm showing the 2 ways to assemble the friction rings. 0 -
if and before you shoot ot, take off the forearm and lightly oil the mag tube. and please DO NOT use WD-40 0 -
NEVER use WD-40 on a firearm, WD stands for water displacement and is only meant for Electrical and Electronic work. As far as the friction rings are concerned, there should be 3 iron cone spacers and 2 brass friction rings, the fourth cone is machined into the slide ring which is part of the barrel. with light loads take 2 cone rings and one brass ring and put them between the recoil spring and the frame of the receiver. There you will never loose them. with heavy loads everything is in front of the recoil spring. These shotguns were built to very close tolerances, keep it CLEAN and OILED. Unless you really know what you are doing do not attempt to disassemble the reciever.

just make sure to use the correct shell (as the bbl is marked), oil it, make sure the bbl is free of obstructions after sitting for long periods, and enjoy it!

Thanks for the tips guys. What type of oil should I use to oil the magazine tube under the friction rings? I had to clean it up and put a little Rem Oil on it to get it to cycle when I first shot it. I have the owners manual and read it before I shot it, so I think I have a handle on the friction ring set up. Putting the extra rings between the spring and the receiver is a good idea. I have seen some bolts in the A-5 that have been damaged due to shooting heavy loads with the rings set for light loads or due to steel shot being used in them. Very dangerous to use one in this condition. Have gunsmith check it out. 0 -
THE REM. OIL WILL WORK FINE, JUST A LITTLE ON THE MAG. TUBE. SWANNIE MENTION A BUNCH OF RINGS AND TWO BRONZE FRICTION PIECES THAT IS ONLY ON SOME OF THE MAGNUM A-5'S. STANDARD A-5'S HAVE TWO STEEL RINGS AND ONE BRONZE PIECE. 0 -
ISLANDER, The S&W 1000 has a unique gas system not even close to the A-5. There's a load of info on your gun at www.browning.com You'll have to surf their site to find it all. They have PDF format owners manuals and schematics you can download too.

Thanks again for all of the tips. I just didn't want anything to happen to this gun because I didn't know to watch out for it. Fortunately, I still have the original owners manual, so the friction ring settings are described in there. I just didn't know if there was something else that wasn't in the manual. 0
