Need help identifying holster
Marked "Rock Island Arsenal E.H.S." and "C.P." on front, inside has "2nd Ban... Art. Comp..." can't read it all... What was this holster made for?

The basic reference text for U.S., Military Holsters, is Scott Meadows book. "U.S. Military Holsters & Pistol Cartridge Boxes"
It's out of print now, perhaps you can obtain it as a interlibrary loan.0 -
If you figure it out and I don't reply could you email me @ jpiest@msn.com to tell me what it is. I have the exact holster, not sure if the markings are identical but the holster is. Mine has a brass knob with a hole through it on the bottom and a leather leg tie attached to it. With the angle and the leg tie, I figure it's a cross draw cavalry holster but don't know for what pistol. Thanks. 0 -

Will do... I have one like yours too and I think that's a 1917 cavalry holster... does it have a half moon of stitching midway up one side as if to make a stop to keep a pistol from sliding down further?0 -
I'm sorry, I lied. While mine looks like yours it has these SUBTLE[:)] differences. Mine is reverse of yours, like a right handers cross draw. Where yours has Rock Island Arsenal, mine has TEXTAN 1942, on the inside of the flap mine has written in pen L8267, while the U.S. is in the same location my lettering is just a little bit different. The craftsmanship of mine does not appear to be as good as yours although mine is in excellent condition. As for the half moon stitching, I'm not sure what you are referring to, which means mine probably doesn't have it. I'm still interested in what it is though since they are pretty much identical in design, I'd say yours is just much older maybe. 0 -
I'd venture that this holster is for the Colt or Smith&Wesson Model 1917 Revolver chambered for 45 ACP though it is possible it was made for the earlier 38 cal. revolvers.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
