Giving away a rifle

I do not believe there is ANY law preventing the gift of a firearm as long as the giver and receiver are otherwise legally able to have purchased the firearm for themself.

Having said that... be very careful WHO you gift a gun to.

    It depends.

Indiana, in general, & some localities have restrictions that may prevent this. ("Assault weapons" are among those affected.) You can find the law in State Laws & Published Ordinances-Firearms, which can be found on the ATF website, or you should check with your local police or attorney general.

If there is no state/local prohibition against the transfer, you do not need to pay a dealer to process it for you.

Keep a record of the transfer, signed by both of you, and including all the info for the gun, as well as your individual info. If there should ever be a problem down the line, paperwork makes a difference in your favor.
