Rifle for the little lady?
My fiance has finally decided that she may come out hunting with me, to see if she likes it. That of course gives me an excuse to buy another gun as she could not shoot anything I own. She's pretty small at about 5'2 110lbs so what would you suggest? It has to be somthing I could use if she ends up hating it, or maybe something for a kid down the line. I was thinking .243, 7mm-08, .260 {the remington .260 with the laminate stock I really really like[:)]} Should I let her pick one out?

Let her pick her own, I dont know if you have a place there to rent different guns, but let her try several, large caliber, small caliber, and what ever she is comfy with, go for it.. Or it will always be, "that isnt my gun" you picked it for me.

See if you can get your hands on a Remington Mod.600 for her to try.
I've got one in .243 and has probably taken more deer than all my others combined.It was designed for folks of smaller stature like youths and women.I love mine,and I'm not even a little guy.[^]

I would try to set up a range trip with a few buddies that have guns in the calibers you feel you are going to chose from and let her get a crack at it that way. Most guys I know (myself included) really enjoy showing newbies the ropes and extolling the virtues of of their pet rounds and guns. I would also try to stay with a nice compromise of medium weight and medium caliber. Too powerful a round in a nice little LW carbine can turn off a #110 lady in a hurry. The 260 is doubless a good round but I think the 243 is perhaps a better choice for her and potentially a youth. Lighter recoil and surely enough gun for most deer in the US and Canada.

Considering her size (same height as my wife), may I suggest one of the "Youth" models from Rem-chest-age, in either 7-08Rem or 308Win. Personaly I feel that a beginning hunter is best served by nothing smaller than a 7-08, due to the larger margin of error it provides (nothing will turn off a new hunter faster than wounding than losing their first deer), save the 243 and 260 for those with more trigger/woods time.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
My girlfriend is roughly the same size as your wife and she shoots my .243 with no problems it is a great round more than capable of taking whitetail deer. 0 -
The calibers I usually suggest for women or or younger shooters are 257Roberts, 250Savage, and 6.5x55....Mild recoil=less flinch. 0 -
01DUSE...Can't believe I didn't think of the 6.5x55! Great all around cartidge and it can and will handle a bewildering variety of bullet weights, each increase with a proportional increase in recoil. The 160 gr RN is a bit of an eye openner if you are used to the 120's...and it has really devastating ( the 160 that is ) downrange performence. The Swedes have been using this combination for many, MANY years on Moose over there and I have heard generally good reports of its' effifacy! Good suggestion!
