Mossberg Model 44 / U.S Marked
[?]Is it correct for a Mossberg Model 44 marked U.S. Property to have a standard front sight with the rear peep sitght? I bought one on ************ and as an after thought was wondering if this front sight was correct. If you go to www.*************** and search for number 5763748 you can see this rifle. Since I am interested in collecting U.S. marked Mossberg rifles, is there any reference books that I may purchase to help me in my quest to only purchase ones which are correct and unaltered?

Yes, I did mention the name of another auction site. I'm new to the board and don't know all the rules. I guess my learning curve begins. Anyway, thanks for your input. I am not a member of the Mossberg Collectors Assn., I just have a keen interest in collecting these U.S. marked versions. Can you give me any info on the sights that i mention?

I would agree with mark. Check the Mossberg assn out. I have seen DOZENS of these remarkably accurate rifles, and there is quite a bit of variation in their sights. I believe that this was done at armory or post lever, rather than at the factory.

CAUTION!!!
U.S. GOVT issue "trainers" will be marked "U.S. PROPERTY" or "PROPERTY OF U.S."...
not to be confused with the MOSSBERG MODEL 44US (d) wich is nearly the same gun, but not an official, or marked (proofed, provenanced) trainer. these guns should have a high arsenal steel blue finish, as opposed to the mil-spec / mil-issue parkerized finish.
i own the later gun.

WHEN THESE WERE AVAILABLE FROM THE ODCMP I GOT A TOTAL OF 9 OF THEM (3 SONS, MYSELF AND ? FUTURE GRAND KIDS). SOME CAME BLUED, SOME PARKERIZED, BUT ALL HAD A UNPROTECTED POST FRONT SIGHT. 0 -
I bought 2 from cmp; both had standard front post open sights, and rear peep sights; one had a Lyman peep, one a Mossberg peep; both are correct but the Lyman is rarer and much more valuable. GREAT guns, worth TEN times the money I paid.
