    I think it is a Browning design. I believe it is a Stevens Model 520.

    The "manufactured square hole" & patent date on the receiver, makes it appear that your shotgun is a Stevens "Model 520".

    They date to the early 20th Century & were designed by John Browning. This particular model was quite successful and was kept in production when Savage bought Stevens in 1920. Production continued as late as W W II when a martial model was produced.

    Although I have never run across the name "Massachusetts Machine Co" before, it wasn't uncommon to find a "Trade Name" on a Stevens produced firearm.
