tubes vs chamber inserts

I am looking to shoot smaller gauge shells through a 12 ga SBS, but don't know the best option. I have been told that only full barrel length tubes provide decent patterns, but others say that chamber inserts and the standard 12 ga chokes provide the same result. Is there anyone who has experience and would be willing to help me out? Thanks.

    Hello if you can go with full lenght tubes chamber inserts dont have any way of sealing the wad to inside of large bore they do work but shot is reduced VEL and pattern is not as good .Up side of chamber inserts is reduced recoil.

    the less recoil isnt the result of the insert, its the result of a smaller shell being fired in a larger heavier gun. full length tubes also have a means of ejecting the hull. remember, these inserts are just a fly by night marketing tool to offer the customer an option from buying full length tubes. bottom line business strategy: devert the money flow from the competition to us, make goal, deal with problems later. wise shopper finds out product is flawed? sell business and move on. 'we made our million who cares,' seems to be the rule of thumb in todays society. there was a day where tube mfg'ers cared about the customer getting the best product. i can name 5. insert co.'s arent one of them. bottom universal rule of shotgunning is ...work from the target back. 1. what do you want to hit? 2. how often do you want to hit it? 3. how much are you willing to pay? 4. what do you hit it with? 5. how do you launch it? 6. how good are you?

    The easy answer here is, use the tubes manufactured by one of the well know makers; Briley and Kolar. That is the best solution to your question. The chamber inserts are not worth even thinking about if you are concerned for quality and accurate shooting.

    I concur with the above. I have used the old 410'ers before I could afford full length tubes and there is a marked difference. I also patterned the small inserts for a friend of mine and found "holes" in the patterns at 10yds+ (not all cases, but pattern was not repeatable). If you can afford to do so, buy the full length, and also get matched weight.

    I believe there was an article on chamber inserts in handloader magazine some time back and results were less than impressive. Usually the next caliber lower (eg. 12 to 20)had somewhat acceptable results but going any lower (eg. 12 to 28 or 410) was pretty much an exercise in futility as the bore was to large to allow adequate seal. Seems to me there was some mention of the bore becoming very dirty.
