STAMP?

Hi
I Have a low grad winchester 1897 #636,xxx takedown 12ga. in Good to very good condition. That has a stamp on the barrel that looks like a p over a w (p over w) inside a circle. Any info on this and the valve of the gun would be hulpful.
Also do you have to be a dealer to sell a gun here?

  You have a described Winchester proof mark. The 1897 model was made from 1897 until 1957. More than a million were produced. The 2004 Blue Book gives values as follows:
  
  90% $500
  80% $450
  70% $350
  60% $250
  
  These are supposed to be retail prices but prices vary in different parts of the country. Winchester Dates of Manufacture by Madis shows the shotgun was made in 1918.
  
  You don't have to be a dealer to list a gun for auction on gunbroker. If the gun sells to a person ourside your state of residence, you have to ship to a federally licensed dealer in the buyer's state of residence. It is customary for the buyer to send payment and a signed copy of the receiving dealers license. You can legally mail it or ship by a parcel service. Some dealers will not accept a gun unless shipped by a dealer. There is no legal requirment for this but dealers can set more stringent rules than the law requires.

  This gun (being made more than 50 years ago) can also be shipped to a person with a Curio & Relic (also known as a C&R) license. In either case , make sure it ships only to the person/address on the license.
