1886 Winchester?? (technical)
I have a 1886 cartridge guide that has been slightly "modified".
The guide has had the small tab, in the center of the body which stick up approximately .145" above the body, ground off. It appears that this tab guides the cartridge rim as the action is being closed, so that cartridge can't move to the right while the action is closing. The cartridge rim rides in a grove which looks as if it is there as a ramp to lift the rear end of the cartride to a horizontal position. The tab is a continuation of the grove.
Can anyone tell me what's the function of the tab?
Will it feed without it?
Why anyone would grind this off is beyond me, but it is!

First... I am not a Model 1886 mechanic (give me a Model 1885 anyday[^])
Second, I am not sure that you are referring to the modified part by the correct name. Art Pirkle's book (Volume 2) does a fair job of describing all of the internal parts in the Model 1886 action, the purpose of them, and their dimensions.
