45acp

I just started reloading again after 15 years. I noticed some of the cases Im reloading for the 45acp use small pistol primers & some use large pistol primers. This is new to me, I only remember using large pistol primers for the 45acp. Is this a new trend toward using small primers in handgun ammo. Are these reloadable? All the cases appear to be brass. So far the only ones I've run into using small primers are the "Federal NT 45 Auto".----Thanks Rich

    Will the extractor leave a mark on the rim of a 45acp shell casing? Just started seeing this with a new Kimber I bought. Was wondering if this is a problem. Thanks

    "NT" = None Toxic, Special Ammo that has a TMJ or non lead bullet, and primers with out lead or dangerous heavy metal content.

    This is required at certain ranges and locations, supposedly for environmental purposes

    Just a note that I noticed. I asked about this a month ago. You will not notice the difference with your standard load unless your shooting matches. If you do notice it then I would just keep the brass seperate. I have shot both in my .45's and haven't noticed any difference yet. Winchester has loaded the same "NT" rounds. (WIN NT)

    Thanks for the post I will have to look more closely at any brass I pick up. This would not be good to try to reload in a star or other PROGRESSIVE loader as the primer punch would jam and lock up machine with much *&&^$(%## on my part .This is what I like about this site even old geezers can get good info.

    If you can, pick up some old GI brass. It's very consistant and very tough......it'll last you thru many, many reloadings.

    To add more confusion, Frankfort Arsenal back prior to WW2 also used a
    special primer in the (at least some) .45 ball ammo. The primer was
    somewhere about .010" either larger or smaller than the normal large
    pistol primer and required F.A. primers. I purchased a quantity of
    these F.A. .45 ACP rounds in 20 rd boxes along with 2000 F.A. primers
    back around 1950. Naturaly these cases got mixed with regular .45
    cases and caused problems. Stupidly I threw away all the F.A. .45
    cases which now probably would be collectors items. Anyone else have
    any info on this? Only place I found anything on this was in my
    Accurate Arms reloading guide (number 1 page 9. about 1994 )
