Red Dot s
I am considering putting a red dot on my .22 pistol I've never used one but I looked through a set up at a gun shop. I see BSA, Tasco, make an inexpensive model. I also notice there is a winchester for sale on the auction here. How accurate and durable are these?

All are good sights. And should give you no problems on a 22. Big thing to check is the MOA of the dot. Many are 5 inch or greater and you need to factor that in for the type of shooting you plan on doing. For example a 5 MOA will cover nominally 1 1/4 of target surface at 25 yards.

They tend to be quite durable and are nice for close in work. I fear, however, that they will never really replace a good quality EER scope for real precision target work. I am talking of differences of the order of 1/2 inch groups vs. "1 groups at perhaps '50, but for some people that is a big deal.
One problem at longer ranges is the size of the target dot. At 50 yds the 2mm dot will civer 4 inches, at 100 yds it covers 8 inches and so on... At a certain point the entire target will be covered by the dot which sorta' precludes accurate target shooting. Having said this, they are excellent for quick acquisition and follow up as seen by professional target shooters (IPSC types)such as Doug Koenig (sp?) et al. For plinking with a 22 pistol or competeing at the '25 to '50 range I would assume they are great, but for real precision work out past that range, I would opt for regular optics. This is my opinion, and I am sure you will see others!
