the farther the target is away from you, the tighter the choke you need. it goes this way...closest to you is is known as an open choke. close targets are gonna need a cylinder, then skeet, i/c, mod, and for those long shots...full, which is a tight choke. close is under 20 yds. far away is over 60 yds. [;)]hope it helps.

WHAT TYPE OF SHOOTING ARE YOU INTO ? SPORTING CLAYS,TRAP,SKEET ??
ALSO WHAT GAUGE SMALL GAUGES DON'T HOLD MUCH SHOT AND CAN'T BE SPREAD BECAUSE OF PATTERN DENSITY . SKEET SHOOTING IS USUALLY DONE WITH A SKEET CHOKE [MOST GAUGES], WHICH IS ALMOST WIDE OPEN AND REALLY SPREADS THE SHOT IN A LARGE PATTERN . TRAP IS SHOT WITH A X-FULL "TRAP" CHOKE WHICH IS A TIGHT CHOKE AND TIGHTLY GROUPS YOUR SHOT. SPORTING CLAYS MAY VARY FROM ONE SETUP TO THE NEXT AND ALSO FROM ONE GAUGE TO ANOTHER ,MODIFIEDS, IMPROVED MOD., ARE GOOD CHOICES. DOUBLE BARRELS AND OVER/UNDERS CAN HAVE TWO DIFFERENT CHOKES AND YOU CAN CHOOSE THE ORDER BY SELECTING BARRELS. I LIKE THIS OPTION BEST AT THE RANGE , IN THE FIELD OR DUCK BLIND . I.C. BARREL FIRST FOR THE CLOSEST SHOT AND MOD. FOR THE GOING AWAY SHOT IF NEEDED.

Thanks bobski
Thinman we are shooting clays and useing 12 and 20 gauges. Who makes a good choke to fit mossberg 500 and remington 870?

Briley probably makes the best, but you do get what you pay for. Remington makes an excellant line of extended choke tubes. 0 -
Briley made a line of Choke Tubes for Remington
for Clay Shooters. Very well made tubes. I believe
I have some of the tubes for the 12 ga Remington.
If I can be of help....

good news is mossberg and remington make their own line of chokes for their guns. i'd just pop in one that was designed for the gun. they are readily available just about anywhere. if you are starting clays, start out with a modified. that way you can play both skeet, trap, and sporting c's.

You can get barrels with the C-lect chokes, you tighten up the end for a tighter pattern. Cabela's sells one that screws into the end of your barrel. No need to carry more than one.

DID YOUR SHOTGUNS COME WITH 3 CHOKES F,M, & I.C.?
IF SO YOU SHOULD ADD A SKEET TUBE TO THE SET. THE MOSSBERG 3" GUNS WILL
WORK WITH WINCHESTER'S WINCHOKES , BROWNING'S STANDARD INVECTORS, AND OTHERS. THATS THREE PRETTY GOOD CHOICES . ALL SELL FOR AROUND $15.00 , I EXPECT THE HASTINGS ARE A GOOD DEAL MORE. ASK SOME OF THE GUYS RUNNING THE RANGE OR OTHER SHOOTERS WHATS WORKING BEST FOR THE SPORTING CLAYS DIFFERENT SETUPS, DIFF. SHOTS . SOME RANGES WILL LET YOU GETAWAY WITH MOD. - I.C. CHOKES MORE OFTEN . SKEET RANGE , USE SKEET CHOKES FOR BEST RESULTS , MORE FORGIVING THAN THE TIGHTER CHOKES.

thinman, please explain what you mean by a range letting you 'get away with modified?' also too, remember, he's new to the game. odds are he's gonna hesitate and not hit the clay until its past the center stake, not over it or sooner. he'll have a better chance of breaking it with mod. when he learns to speed up, skeet will be a better choice. then again...all the pro's are switching to full chokes these days so less lead guessing is required on all shots. mod will force our new shooter to hold closer to the target and force him to be right on. once he perfects it and switches to skeet or i/c, AAALLL his birds will break as if he wasnt even trying. on trap, odds are he's gonna shoot 16yd, so again, mod is perfect. when he starts playing handicap, then full will be best.

BOBSKI,
DO YOU USE THE SAME CHOKE ON EVERY SP. CLAY RANGE ?
I HAVE NOT HAD THE PLEASURE OF SHOOTING SPORTING CLAYS . IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT EACH RANGE IS SET UP SOMEWHAT DIFFERENTLY . ONE RANGE MAY HAVE A LARGER % OF CLOSE RANGE TARGETS THAN LONG RANGE TARGETS . I WOULD THINK THAT THE CHOKE APPROPRIATE FOR THE LARGER % SHORT/LONG TARGETS WOULD GIVE YOU AN ADVANTAGE : SPORTING CLAYS WITH A GOOD MANY CLOSE RANGE SHOTS THE MOD. SHOULD BE A GOOD CHOICE FOR GETTING THE CLOSE SHOTS AND STILL GET A GOOD % OF THE LONGER ONES..
THE MORE OPEN CHOKES WOULD BE TO A NEW SHOOTERS ADVANTAGE, OR NOT ?
DO I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY WILL LEAD TO BAD HABITS .
THE LARGER THE PATTERN [GIVEN ITS EVENLY SPREAD] SHOULD MAKE THE MARGIN OF ERROR LARGER AND GIVE BETTER RESULTS.
HOW DOES THE CHOKE AFFECT YOUR LEAD OTHER THAN THE SIZE [WIDTH] OF PATTERN ? DISTANCE,SPEED & ANGLE DETERMINE LEAD FOR THE MOST PART, RIGHT ??
HOPE TO TRY THIS GAME OF SP. CLAYS SOON . BTW I WILL PROBLABLY NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE UP MY MIND THEN EITHER . MY DOUBLE GIVES ME TWO CHOICES
OF CHOKES , NOW I LIKE THAT IDEA .
