Illegal Walther PPK?

I have a "friend" who has the opportunity to buy a German PPK (NOT
PPK/S) for a really good price. Only problem is, the proof marks
indicate that this particular PPK was made in 1976...

Now, I thought the PPK was illegal to import after 1968? Obviously
this gun got to these shores outside the normal channels (no importer
marks). Should my friend snatch up this unusual specimen, or should
he pass on this renegade, illegal alien of a gun?

    I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. At one time ( I don't know if it still exists? ), law enforcement officers were exempt from statutes governing GCA 68 ( The law that prohibited the importation of small handguns).

    Where I use to live, a bunch of the badge boys got permission to buy GERMAN made Walther TPH's as back-up guns. (This was before US production started ).

    Naturally being the ethical public servants, that they were. They promptly ran on down to the local gunshows and sold them for big bucks.

    Is it possible that it was purchased in Germany by a G.I. and legally shipped to the US as part of their household goods?

    It could have also been purchased by a GI and hand-carried home.

    A friend of mine bought several pistols in Germany that were legal there but not generally importable into the USA. He brought them home and made a mint on them.

    In either case, smuggling into the US a gun that is illegal to import is a felony. It happens, people who do this don't usually get caught, but it's still illegal. However, it is unlikely that, once these guns are in the US, any LEA can identify them, or has a reason to prosecute the owner.

    I asked BATF about the practice of LEO's selling for profit guns that are not importable. They denied that it happens, but said that they would prosecute any LEO that they catch doing it.
