MARK CHRIST. / M-1D SPECIAL FORCES???
every so often i pick a gun from the collection at random, take it out, clean it, look it over, and update the file on it.
i took the M-1D GARAND this weekend, and while updating the file i came across some curious items....
the bill of sale CMP FORM 138-CMP1 calls / identifies the gun as a "M1-D SPECIAL FORCES" and also as an "M-1D SF". paper work also states that the gun was selected by MJF 3/11/00 and calls is an "M1-D SF".
when the gun arrived, DAVE Mc CLAIN looked it over, wrote up a DATA / SPEC sheet, and wrote down some comments. he id`d it as a "M1-D SF / SPECIAL FORCES", and described it as "THE BEST SF I HAVE EVER SEEN". the TE is under 3, and its a SPRINGFIELD 1945 DOM.
my books show around 23,000 M1-D rifles being made, total production run.
1. what is the differance between an M1-D and an M1-D SPECIAL FORCES???
2. why cant i find a referance to an SF M1-D in my books???
3. are they differant guns???
4. if they are differant, how many M1-D`s were M1-D SF`s???
5. what is an SF M1-D worth, with the proper documentation, and the notes from DAVE???
anyone who can shed some light on this subject, and help me clarify my file would be much revered. any info, facts, suggestions, opinions, etc...

Your rifle is one of a group turned over by the Army to the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 1999. They had been used by a Special Forces Army Reserve Unit, & most of them were WELL used. I can't recall the quantity, but believe that it is < 100 rifles. They were sold to winners of a special lottery held by CMP in 2000 for, as I recall, $950. These are the only M1D's that can be traced to a specific military unit, so that makes them of interest to certain collectors.
On the other hand, the highest prices for regular documented M1D's always goes to those New-In-Box-After-Rebuild. An average well-used SF rifle might bring less, but one in really good condition might bring more; it all depends upon finding the right buyer.

1. the latest issue of "STANDARD CATALOG OF MILITARY FIREARMS" goes out of there way to indicate that having CMP / DCM paperwork or provanance (ie a paper trail of GOVT docs)can add as much as 50% to the value of an M1 GARAND.
2. yes, this gun came from the last LOTTERY held for the M1-D rifles, and in fact was the last gun to be sold / shipped out of that small allotment. so it is one of those SPECIAL FORCES RESERVE rifles.
3. i am considering sendingg DAVE an email on the gun...

I had heard that the SF M1d's weere ones from which the flash hiders had been removed or which had the Mark 37 Flash hider vice the Mark 2 Flash Hider. I was led to believe by someone no less than Jim Adell that they were slight less desirable than the non-SF M1D's because they lacked the flash hider. I'm not sure if that is truley relevent anymore since the CMP has since then sold some M1D's sans scope, flash hider, and cheek pad. In any case though just the association with SF ought to add vice subtract from their price over the years. Of course not having a $275 M2 flash hider might hurt the value a little. beach 0 -
we have added authentic accsesories. its complete.
it now has the pronged flash hider, the cheekpiece, the issue scope pouch, rubber eye piece, etc...
we had the scope proffesional internaly restored by a former MARINE armorer recomended by a friend in the GCA.
while i do care about / am interested in the value of the gun, i would realy like to here more on the history of these SF guns. i know that they saw extensive use during KOREA and VIETNAM. i am told they were stll an issue TO&E item for SPECIAL FORCES RESERVE units well into the 80`s.
i will end up emailing DAVE, or the GCA for a final verdict, but i always seek out and trust the info you guys provide.
