Minimum barrel spec for choke installation

Can anybody give me the minimum barrel OD spec, or barrel thickness, for screw in choke installation? A friend has an 1100 that he wants to fit for screw in chokes, and I'm looking at buying a shotgun not available with interchangeable chokes and having it retrofitted. I've learned that because of some variation in manufacture, you can't just grab a shotgun off the shelf and retrofit it. Thanks for the help!

    according to brownell's 12 ga. should be >.848" or thinwall >.828" also depends on instside barrel dia. normal 12 ga. is .729" but no a shotguns have this inside dia. i've seen a rem. 11/48 and a win. m-97 that had very large inside dia. barrels (>.740")that couldn't be fitted for standard choke tubes. browning invector plus barrels are oversize (inside dia.).

    There is an outside diameter that must be met, in order that the muzzle can be reamed and threaded....PLEASE NOTE... Just because the O.D. measurement is within allowable tolerance... That doesn't mean that the I.D. is concentric with the O.D. If they aren't concentric with each other.. You will have a shorter and shorter barrel and wind up with a nice house barrel with still no tubes installed...BEEN THERE.......DONE THAT........

    Check page on choke size on jimsgunsmithing.com. They make 12 ga chokes in about five different diameters. Basic are rem/win chokes, tru choke, and the thinwall. they will cover 98% of the 12 Ga's

    Here is a link to a very good company that does this type of work at a reasonable price. Since they do the work, and can furnish choke tubes, I recommend that you contact them, and that way you are sure of the minimun diameter. http://www.colonialarms.com/serv.html

    Colonial used to have the specs on their web page for regular and thinwall installation. If you have the calipers to measure the OD accurately.

    I had a gunsmith put Colonial thin wall chokes on a lightweight 1100 in 20 gauge. The barrel may have had to be shortened an inch to get to a thicker wall, I don't recall.
