what is a c&r license?

if one has a C&R license, does that mean that person can purchase any C&R firearm and have it shipped directly to their home in any state without going through an FFL? someone please clarify this for me. thanks.

    It stands for Curio and Relics. I believe (but not sure) a firearm has to be made before 1898 or be on a special list. I am not one, so don't know for sure, but I know there are plenty on here that know the details.
    The C&R doesn't replace the FFL for new guns, but it works for old ones - at least that's how I understand it.

    I have had my C&R for several months now. If a gun is at least 50 yrs old it qualifies as a C&R. There is a list of newer guns that are also considered C&R's, such as commemoratives and collectible guns. Yes, C&R stands for Curios & Relics.

    In Cal, where I live, handgun C&R's can be acquired, but have to go through a licensed dealer, unless made prior to the 1898 date.
    Here we have a one handgun a month rule, but with the C&R we are exempt from that rule.

    For the federal C&R lic to be used we must also have a C.O.E. or Certificate of Elegibility issued by the state.

    im also in CA, thanks for the help so far, but i need some clarification as to the shipping methods. ive read elsewhere that i do not have to have the C&R firearm shipped to an FFL when nor go through the normal firearm purchase paperwork, that i can just receive the firearm at my home, and log it in my book.

    Thats right for C&R "long guns". You can have them sent directly to you without a dealer getting involved.

    so for handguns, the process would be the same as any other normal firearm? the whole ffl fees and everything?

    In California if you hold a C&R you used to be able to order handguns classified as C&R.

    No longer.

    Now you need a COE from the Cali DOJ just to order old rifles and shotguns.


    The California Curio and Relic Federal Firearms License holders will not be able to use their Federal Firearms License to order firearms for their collection after January, 1st 2005.


    It's called the Steinburg Amendment.


    No more C&R License Holders in California. Makes the Full Fledged FFL holders happy....the few left in California.

    whattt??!? no more C&R in CA. im starting to believe what everyone is saying about Ca banning all guns. im just about to turn 21 and waiting to get that cz52 too. =(. thanks for the help.

    The COE is not required. If you have one, you can avoid the ten day wait when buying from a California dealer. It has no force outside the state and is not needed when buying or ordering from outside California.

    Any C&R eligible firearm can be shipped directly to you under federal law. Doesnt matter if its a handgun or rifle. It is all spelled out on the BATF web site. Any firearm made before Jan 1, 1899 can likewise be shipped directly to you, no license (C&R or otherwise) required.
