Bushmaster M17s
I recently purchased one of these compact little rifles for an all around defense/plinking gun. It's size makes it quite easy to deploy from a vehicle. I think it could be the ultimate "police" rifle. I've yet had a chance to fire it more tha a few times to zero the Bushnell Holographic sight. Anyone had experience, good or bad with this series of rifle? Any strengths or weaknesses? Any advice?

This is a very good rifle. Its action is based on the AR-180. There are a couple of issues. One: It heats up and the fore hand guard in rapid fire gets very hot. Second: the sighting sytem sucks. Third it is heavy for most 223 type rifles. My 2 cents [8D]

I've owned one for a long time, so I'll add my two cents here:
GOOD POINTS
- Compact and well-balanced. Perfect for situations where space is an issue.
- Reliable. One of the few long guns I own that has NEVER had a misfeed, failure to fire, or any other sort of similar mishap.
- Pretty accurate. I've always gotten pretty tight groups with mine.
- Easy to maintain. Very little disassembly required.
BAD POINTS
- With the high carrying handle, cheek weld is gonna be kind of weird.
- Magazine release can be a pain. No quick-release, so if you're using it for something other than plinking, I'd reccommend a hi-cap magazine.
- Iron sights are BS... and that's putting it kindly. A red dot or other scope is a necessity.
- It gets hot. Really hot. After about two or three magazines, it gets pretty uncomfortable.
- Trigger is pretty stiff. This never bothered me, but I know a lot of folks that consider this an issue.
In my opinion, the good outweighs the bad. Bushmaster has a good start here, but they need to improve on it. If they corrected a few (in my opinion) minor flaws, they would have a perfect gun.

I knew the sights are a joke, the weapon was made for an after market system and the Bushnell Holo gives me good situational awareness. I've worked for the last seventeen years as a part time (sworn, paid, not reserve) Police Officer in a small town of about 6,000 on the weekends. The problem is that five miles away (across the county line) is a town of 150,000. More nights than I could begin to count I've worked alone with my closest backup a county unit that could be as far as 30 minutes away. Most of the local towns folk are decent, but we have three "trailer Parks" with rental units, a large rent subsidised apartment complex, and two very "red neck" bars. we're equiped with body armor, .40 S&W Glock model 22s and the typical 870 loaded with 00 Buck, but I feel the need for a short well balanced all around utility rifle. In the scenerio I envision the weapon would be used for a couple of long range "surgical" shots and not a protracted "firefight". I thing I've finally found just the right rifle in the Bushmaster. i had one for a short time. i just couldnt get used to the feel, trigger, mag release. sold it and went with an AR. just wasnt my thing 0
