Heres something for your Buddy to mull over:
MERWIN & BRAY, Worcester, Mass.1864-1868. Became Merwin & Simpkins in 1868 and also Merwin-Talor & Simpkins the same year. Also within the same year became Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Also in 1892 became Hulbert Bros. Out of Business in 1896...And heres a very interesting Tid Bit...The BALLARD RIFLE, Made by Ball & Williams 1861-1866, Merrimack Arms & Mfg. Co. 1866-1869, Brown Mfg. Co. 1869-1873....J.M. Marlin from 1875...Who is the Maker of The Merwin & Bray Rimfire Falling Block Rifles...Now lets see if your buddy can make some sense outta all this information..... The PKINS is Simpkins
as posted...This Falling Block Rifle was a Sporting Model........

idahjo,
the merlin & hurbert and merwin & bray and other merwin associated companies were just sales agencies and firearms marked with their names were actually manufactured by other companies. hopkins and allen supplied the largest number of firearms for merwin & hulbert. i don't know the full history of these companies but there appears to be some connection between them.
i would rather wait for pictures but i am fairly certain your falling block rifle was manufactured by hopkins & allen in the 1890's

Thanks goforth, will post pix when I get them.
