Winchester Model 61

I have a Winchester Model 61. It is still in the box and has never been fired. There is a small scratch on the barrel. It also has the tag hanging on the trigger guard. Any idea how much it is worth?

    What is the value of a Winchester Model 61 from the 1960s? It's got an 8+ inch foregrip, 24 inch barrel and is in G to VG condition. Chambered for 22 S, L, and LR. Serial Number 322xxx.

    Likely to be somewhere just north of $1000 (maybe a bit more if you find a really interested collector). The original box and hang tag are a BIG plus.

    Lets start with the box and hang tags: people might sneer but I'd say at least $175. A near mint, unfired 61 shoud be $800 plus assuming it has a grooved receiver, less if without, unless it's a prewar 61 and then you'd be over $1200. I sold a M-12 box and tags for $125 and that was 10 years ago. They made 7 times as many M-12 as M - 61 so you go figure....

    Could you give us a little more info? Caliber, round or octagon barrel, serial number or DOM, barrel legend, stock configuration, ETC...? Bert is the man on this one and if you give him a little info he will likely run with it!

    I have a modest collection of model 61's but with the exception of an ungrooved example that is about 99%, they're used as shooters. I follow prices on Gunbroker and other sites and sources and have seen the few existing NIB 61's selling for 1200 to 1600. Whether or not those prices are actually realized is another story. Several years ago I purchased a 62A at an out of state show(I had an FFL) that was unfired in the box, but had been assembled and had the action worked-the usual wear marks on the bottom of the barrel from the forearm wood were slightly visible. Other than that, the gun and box-including all papers and tags-were pristine. I advertised the outfit nationally and had calls from a few serious collectors who, once they found the gun had been assembled, immediately lost interest. I owned that gun for a long time. My point is that if your gun has a visible scratch-no matter how small or faint-the guys with the deep pockets probably wouldn't give top dollar for your outfit. Don't misunderstand; it sounds like a wonderful gun and I wish I had one in that shape with the box et al. And, as another poster said, value is also affected by the age and configuration of the gun: pre or postwar, grooved or non, and caliber markings to name a few.

    Hello KansasKW,

    OK, your rifle was manufactured at the very end of the production run (1962 or 1963), and it should have a grooved receiver. If it were mine, the minimum price tag I would put on it would be $1100.

    If you take it out of the box and shoot it, immediately subtract at least $250, do not pass "Go", and turn in your "Get Out Of Jail Free" card. The longer you keep that rifle in its NIB condition, the more it will go up in value.

    Winchester model 61 octagon barrel. Single caliber marking (.22 long rifle only). 1937 vintage. 92%-94% condition. Now that must be worth a few bucks.
