Help on AR-15 Barrel Twist
I am soon going to purchase a 16 inch upper for the AR-15 I am putting together. I am undecided as to go with a 1 in 9 or a 1 in 7 inch twist barrel. What is better rate overall, and what is the difference in bullet wieghts each will stabalize. Thanks

1 in 9 will be the better overall handling a more diverse bullet weight without overstabilization. 1 in 7 will handle up around 70 gr., and the 1 in 9 tends to like it a little closer to 55 to 60 grains. A lighter bullet, overstabilized has a tendency to self destruct on the way onto target if pushed too fast. This really depends, I guess on what range of applications you are going to look to fill with your gun. The faster twist with its' heavier bullet weight capabilities will give you a little more range and a better ability to buck the wind but is not too good at taking the light bullets. In your 16" barrel I think I would advise the 1 in 9 as it will give good accuracy and give you a better range of ammo applications like mil. surp. ammo etc. I assume you are going for an M-4 type gun so flexibility is likely going to be desireable wheras long range accuracy would be secondary so heavy bullets will not be as important.

I have a 1 in 8 twist by dpms in 16" .920 bull barrel and love it it holds a under 1" group at 200 yards using winchester 55grain and wolf cheap ammo not sure the weight but both did the same of course i dont know the weight of the wolf so could be same as winchester 0 -
