opinions on Astra A100 .45 cal/Steyr M40
I'm looking at two very different pistols, the Astra is a fairly compact da/sa 45 with controls set up like a Sig. Its in pretty good shape, 90% overall with an asking price of $325.
The Steyr M40 is a polymer pistol with funky sights and safety. Asking price on this one is $320 NIB. I dug up an old article in Gun-Test magazine and they seemed to like it but I'd like to hear from someone with long term experience with them.
Are these prices fair? Are these guns worth considering? I plan on lots of plinking and would like something to hold up. Thanks

I don't know anything about the Steyr.
Astra went out of business in 1998. If you buy the A100, it will be a orphan.

I have the Steyr S40 compact for a CCW. I enjoy shooting it. The sights are hard to adjust to in the beginning, but after a few mags thru it you will find that they are very easy to find to point and shoot. The grip angles are very comfortable and the polimer frame is very sturdy so it doesn't have the light weight you would think. It is a very solid pistol. I think the safety features help sell the system. The trigger saftey is so easy to operate, just raise your trigger finger and click...it's off and ready to fire. It's a wonder more companies don't jump on it's design. The locking system is a great benefit if you want to keep it out of the wrong little hands. The small problems I have with it are that the magazines are not easy to find and Steyr's service company here in America is less than customer friendly. You can get mags thru several internet sites. Every now and then it will have a hiccup with an ejection (as do a lot of semi-autos) but not frequent enough to ever be concerned with its performance. Steyr is making a new M series pistol that looks really great and they will reproduce the old M and S series next year, according to the Steyr website. Overall, I would not discourage one from purchasing a Steyr pistol. Good luck in your choice and good shooting!

I have an Astra 100 in both .45 and .9MM. I had a Steyr that I sold because I hated the sights. 0 -

They both function perfectly and are as accurate as I can shoot these days. I have owned most of the wonder nines at one time or another and the only one I kept is the Astra. I have to admit I still own my Gold Cup .45 but the Astra .45 wasn't mean't to be a target pistol. I've been involved with guns for over 40 years and these Astras had to overcome my long held belief that all Spanish guns were junk. 0 -
i also own a astra a-100 in 9mm and it is a top notch firearm..if you can, try to find one with the 17 round mag...the mags are getting hard to find and when you do the price is high.. the trigger on these are nice but it does have alot of travel on your first shot.. 0
