M44 Bolt Tightness Question
Just stripped down the M44 to all its components, cleaned it, threw some lubricant on it, and put it all back together. Now when I open the bolt it's difficult to do so and feels tight as you rotate it counter-clockwise to open it. Did I reassemble the bolt incorrectly? I compared it to another M44 bolt and they look the same.
Any reason for this?

With the gun unloaded, pull back the firing pin till it cocks. Then try opening the bolt. If it is appreciably easier, you have crud or a lack of lube in the bolt assembly itself. If it is the same, more or less, you may have other issues.

Just did it and it was much easier, I'll put a bunch of CLP into the actual bolt assembly and hopefully that will work.

while these guns will never reach a "MAUSER" level of smoothe operation without some patiant work with a "stone", cleaning out the crap, good lubrication, and a few hundred rounds through the gun go a long way towards resolving this atypical MOSIN-NAGANT problem.

I just finished putting an ungodly amount of CLP on the entire bolt assembly and the grooves to slide the bolt in to. This loosened everything up quite nicely. I guess when you wipe ever last speck of dirt and grease out of the thing and only put moderate lubrication on there things are bound to seize up [B)]. I'll let this coat of CLP sit for a while and will later reapply another coat.

How much cosmoline was in them?? 0 -
Actually I couldn't believe it, there was not a single speck of Cosmoline on them. I emailed the guy before they came here to find out how much would be there and he said there would be none. True to his word I did not find a bit! [^]

years ago, these guns came into the shop slathered with cosmoline. lately they have been pretty clean, and my personal guns were damn near minty fresh clean.
please take care and remember that guns you are cleaning (ie stripping off cosmoline) and guns you are having refinished or refinish yourself need to be oiled and lubricated.
the stripping / refinishing process not only removes crap and refinishes surfaces, it removes all oils and lubricants. they must be liberaly re-applied.

I think I would have paid more for one that didn't have cosmoline. I never want to remove that stuff again. 0
