Deer Rifle for Youth hunter
I konw there are alot of them out there. But here is what the deal it. I have a brother in-law that will be 15 this year. He has been out hunting with me while I hunted deer and now he wants to take one himself. He is small for his age. He has tried my 117gr loads in a 25/06 and it was a little much for him. I was thinking of somthing in the 6mm or 243 for him. I seen the 243 NEF youth gun and it fits him. But can a regular stock be put on after he grows up some so he can still use it later in life. Or is there a better single shot out there I should look at. I don't like the Thompsons so they are out of the question.

My 11 yr old loves his NEF 223and I also understnd you can get longer stocks and different barrels for it.The gun shoots very well,too! 0 -
Where I hunt your not alowed to use a 223 for deer. I am going to go with the Rossi. 3 Barrels (22lr, 243, and 20ga) You cant go wrong with that combo for a first gun. Thanks Thinman.

My son killed 3 deer the year he turned 9. Did it with a 30-30 Winchester--all one-shot kills. The recoil of the 170 gr. bullets did seem to "pop" the little feller, but he never complained once. His biggest concern was me sneaking him out of school to go hunting with me. We sure had a lotta fun.

Nice. My first deer was at the age of 11 or 12 (whatever 1 year younger than legally allowed was [:D]) in Montana. I had a doe tag and my dad had a buck tag (mule deer, both), but we shot each other's deer. I had the S&W model 1500 in .223 with Simmons scope and he had the exact same gun and scope in .308. I actually took my deer with the .308, at I think 200 yards, one-shot kill. But I was even worse at range estimation then than I am now, so it may have only been 100. Regardless, I was so proud of myself. I wish it were mule deer season, age 12, every day. [:D]0 -
My dad got me a rifle chambered in 7.62x39 when I was 9 years old and it had a muzzle break that greatly reduced the recoil. If I was his age I would think that I would be able to handle that or a standard .223 chambered gun. Both, if place right, should take down a deer. Also, if he cant take the recoil of these guns he should hit up a gym or start eating. I've been shooting aks and ar15s since I was 8 years old without fearing them or the recoil at all. Honestly, guns chambered with those rounds offer no recoil compared to a .308, .30 30 or .306.

The Mossberg SSi is a nice single shot also avaible in .243 and 20ga. 0
