I dont have much use for anyone shooting at an animal with a pistol at 500 yards, and I have 3 Encores.

Well your basic choices would include those cartridges that TC offers in a 26" heavy barrel, that also offer enough retained velocity at the longest range your likely to shoot at.
Personaly I'd lean toward the 300Win Mag loaded with 165 or 180gr Nosler Balistic tips.
Accuracy wise I'd suggest going with a Bullbury barrel/forend hanger setup.
In either case, handloading and a lot of practice at the longer ranges is required (100yd groups don't mean squat for distance shooting, 300yd groups are much more meaningful and groups at your maximum range mean everything). Practice in the worst weather conditions (wind, rain, cold, heat, etc) you'd be willing to hunt in.
Pass on any shot that your less than 95% confident in making a clean kill, given the weather conditions and shooting position your faced with (the last part goes for everyone regardless of the range).

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

You left out a lot of info ...

    Pistol or carbine config. ?

What barrel length(s) are you considering ?

    Open sight or optics?

    If optics ... what type?

Accuracy wise I believe that the Encore still holds the 500 meter record, but there is a vast difference between "killing paper" and humanely taking game at 500 yds/mtrs

25-06 may suffice for antelope and smaller game inside say 200 yards or so, but I really think of this "quarter bore" as a heavy varmint round.

Give us some more info. and you'll get better opinions on caliber.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!
