Sounds like the ones you bid on, may be a Wildcat? Can you give the link to the auction?

    6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser

-- I know that 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser is a little different than my M96's chamber, is 6.5x55 SKAN the correct spec? --

No, it is not. The 6.5x55 SKAN is chambered ONLY in the Sauer 200 FSR used by Scandinavian fieldshooters (fieldshooting is a sport, not a military term). It is merely a 6.5x55 SE where the distance to the datum line has been elongated approx. 0.004", all other specs unaltered. This was done so as to be able to offer really hot x55 loads that would not be able to chamber in the old Swede Mausers. Liability, you know... Dies for the SKAN are offered by Forster only.

6.5x55 Swedish is the cartridge that your m/96 was made for, 6.5x55 Swedish is the spec you want on your dies.

Sure hope someone outbids you as the price of both that rifle AND the Forstner dies are really high!! Not to mention what would happen to an 1896 pattern Swedish Mauser if you ever managed to get a SKAN in the chamber!!

Thanks for all the info. I am very careful about getting the right ammo for my rifles. Before I got the Swede, I didn't realize how MANY different 6.5 cartridges there are. I checked back on the auction and it clearly states 6.5x55 SCAN, so unless someone outbids me I guess I'll have to eat this one. The link is:

Dumb me, I thought that SCAN was short for Scandinavian. Emery

Guess my link doesn't work; just search for Hornady 6.5x55 SCAN dies on the politically correct site (ebay). Emery

Hello I would never suggest that you use load data for the 6.5x55 skan in your rifle BUT if you look at the cartdridge specs. I do think that you could use the dies I bet if you had 3 sets of dies all marked the same there would be a wider range of specs then your 2 cartdridge show.

Perry Shooter...can you clarify that a bit? I'm a bit confused as it looks to me as though there are significant differences and even if you could make the SKAN dies work, the brass would be kinda' short lived. I'll watch for your post.

I'm still a bit confused....I contacted the seller of the dies and he said that 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and 6.5x55 SCAN are one and the same. Is there a difference between SKAN and SCAN? Also, these dies are made by Hornady. Any more insight? Thanks. Emery

I'm going to go out on a limb here for the sake of clarity. There are supposed to be two versions of the 6.5 x 55 dies.

    - One is labeled as 6.5 x 55 Swede or Swedish Mauser.

    - The other Is labeled as 6.5 x 55 SKAN not Scan.

*** As stated above, the only manufacturer of the SKAN dies is supposed to be Forster.

These are the SAAMI specs. for headspace gauges:

6.5 SKAN 1.831"(GO) HGSKANG 1.835"(NO GO) HGSKANN Not Available (FIELD)

    6.5 x 55 Swede 1.779"(GO) HG6555G 1.785"(NO GO) HG6555N 1.789"(FIELD) HG6555F

So, in response to perry shooter, I wouldn't bet on it.

Here is the information with order numbers from the Forster website:

    6.5 x 55 Swedish 004311 028971 U04312 005401 028961 006071 U00064

    6.5 x 55 SKAN 004612 029081 U04612 005621 029911 006081 U00067

Contact the seller and get the Part numbers from him/her and check this set of numbers. The answer will be obvious.

Hello please let me explain my point. In reloading rifle cases these two you have the head and base diameter is only 3 thousand of an inch different and dies don't size all the way down the different between the two at the beganing of the shoulder is 1 thousand of a inch a moot point.the ouside of the neck will be sized down smaller than either cartdridge and then expander plug will size on the way out for 6.5 MM bullet again moot point, now as to lenght the distance from base to start of shoulder on the two differ by 6 thousand's this can be adjusted by turning the die in or out and lenght of neck is a non issure because long er neck just goes deeper into the die. Hello please tell me why it will not work . some people use 308 dies to reload 30/06 buy adjusting die out. Thanks Karl

them dies are form hornady. so, go straight to hornady. see what they say about it. get your info from the people who built it. then will know what works. and may have other info for you about the cartage.
