.17 hornady

I am thinking of buying a .17 Hornady to my collection for grey squirrels. Any comments on their performance with the species?

    I would think you will need to limit the shots to head shots, as I think the round will be very destructive for any thing else, assuming your eating the grey's.

    You should check out the American Rifleman magazine. They just had an article about the .17 round and how it has come into play in the gun world. The magazine basically said that the round is intended to replace the venerable .22lr. The ballistics are about the same. The bullet is basically placed in a .22lr shell that is tapered down to fit the bullet. It has a higher velocity than a standard .22lr round with about or the same energy. They considered it a varmit nightmare. Honestly, if you are going for squirrel you could use a .177 pellet gun or .22 pellet gun and that would work. I have used pellet guns on jack rabbits and they work well. The only reason I would suggest a pellet gun is the noise and cost factor. Depending on where you live, a cartridge bullet may be illeagal. If you live in a rural area...I would get the gun.

    Moose56, the 17 HMR should be fine for grays. I use mine for Reds all the time(I like the grays). The 17 is nothing like a necked down 22lr. It is a necked down 22 mag. And it is suppose to shoot flat out to 200 yards. I cant't confirm that, I've only shot mine at the 100 yard targets, and it is a very accurate rifle as long as their is little wind.

    i shoot ground squirrels all day long at 200 yards with no hold over. wind at 200 is a bit tough on the .17 bullet. i assume you will eat the greys so you will definatly need to head shoot them. body shots are destructive at any range! i shoot the ones at 125 or less in the head. my cooper 57M with a weaver V16 is very accurate! my friend has a ruger 17/22 with the same scope and he likes it too.

    If you are gonna eat them, you gonna have to head shoot them or else there ain't much left to eat. My Ruger 77 puts 3 shot into 1 hole at 75 yards. Real accurate!

    I love my .17 HMR, but I normally shoot targets with it. Head shots on squirrels at 100 yards aren't a problem shooting from a rest, but the 17 grain bullet does frag out exceptionally well. Hornady has a new 20 grain round that's supposed to be specifically for hunting, with less fragmentation and better penetration. It's on their website, but I haven't seen it in the store yet.

    i think he ment the .17 mach 2, this is the .22 l.r. (cci, stinger) case necked down to .17. should work ok for grays, just go for head shots.
