1911 38 special/midrange Magazine
Can i modify a 38 super mag to use for a 38 midrange barrel? Has anyone heard of this?

They never worked very good you can rechamber a 38 super barrel to 38 special and then you have a pistol that locks up like a 1911 in 45 ACP instead of straight blowback like a colt 38 goldcup midrange the colt 38 gold cups never shoot very good . I have a 38 super that was converted by GILES to 38 special with two 38 special mags that i would sell but if all you want is mags go to www.champchoice.com ask for mag item # 732m on page 39 0f their 2004 catalog . these are great folks 0 -
the colt midranges I have shot have worked fine if properly cared for and with proper ammuntion. Factory mags are available on auction sites quite frequently, but aren't cheap. 0 -
Didn' mean to inply that they did not WORK but that they never shot up to the level of a S & W model 52 or a Colt 1911 with lock up barrel. colt tried for years and had three types of barrels straight blow back just does not shoot as small groups. There has never been a BULLS-EYE centerfire record held by a colt 38 MID-RANGE gold cup. 0 -
p shooter, i own a colt 38 super modified to 38 special by GILES as well. it is by far the best gun ive ever owned. i bought it from major wesley shipes, u.s. army shooting team. he had it built in 1957 and retired in 1957 and never shot it. i bought it from him in 1988 with only test rounds fired in it! box papers, targets, becklmeyer grips, whew...what a gun. i shot 10 round cloverleafs benched OH at 25yds with it. i only shoot it to humble the M52 shooters. what i'd give to find the exact same gun in 45! got any leads on a nice one? 0 -
Thanks everyone for the info. I finally got the so called 38 midrange barrel. It is a suposedly a 38 super barrel converted to 38 midrange. I had to hack on it so it would fit on the slide. I also had to hack on it so the 38 brass fit in the barrel and the slide would still lock up. Anyone heard of a 38 super being converted to 38 special? 0 -
Ok sorry for the stupid question obviously it has been done but since I don't know that the barrel has been change how bad would it bee to shoot a .358 bullet out of a 38 super barrel? Just in case the previous owner didn't modify the barrel. The 38 brass slides right in no problem. 0 -
Hello when you said hack I hope you had knowledge to do the job correctly fitting a barrel to a slide can be tricky and if too much is cut in wrong places can be dangerous. as stated by BOBSKI I also have a GILES gun and it shoots great just have to pick my times as 30 mile winds at CAMP PERRY is not the place. as far as bullets have no worry any 38 special wadcutter that I know of are soft lead and if you slug the bore I bet its .3565-.357 . PS BOBSKI I got a GILES 45 on a 45 COLT "KIT" slide frame and barrel If you were in VIRGINIA instead of half a world away you would be welcome to shoot it but I don't want to sell I would sell the 38 if you want a matched pair Karl 0 -

Must have a really calm day if it's only 30. When I shot the smallbore matches up there I was worried my bullet was going to come back at me.....[:D]0 -
I took a little metal off the locking lugs so the barrel would match up to the slide. Does any one have a picture of the barrel of the 38 suppe converted to 38 special? The one I have doesn't have a feed ramp. It looks like it was filled in. Also the 38 wad cutters I have are .358. Will this be a problem if the barrel is 356 - 357? 0 -
no problem on 358 if you can make a mark on them with your fingernail they are soft enought. My converted barrel has feed ramp from factory chamber ??? I might be able to take photos next week but don't know how to post on this site put up an email you can receive pics on. Karl 0 -
