Colt 1911 Government XS Barrel Replacement?

I had a catastrophic stoppage at the range with my Colt Government XS 5" .45. When I finally got the brass unjammed, and the pistol disassembled, I discovered that the barrel nearly exploded at its centerpoint. It's pregnant now and I have to replace it. The XS model (O Model, circa 1999)is called an "enhanced" version of the regular Government model. It has subsequently been replaced by the XSE model. My question is whether I can purchase a "drop-in" replacement barrel without having to pay a gunsmith to make appropriate adjustments or whether the enhanced tolerances quoted by Colt has affected the fit and lock-up in the barrel assembly area which requires a gunsmith's involvement? Also, when I questioned Colt about their replacing my barrel under warranty, they said I would have to ship it in for them to inspect. Before I take on the cost of shipping both ways, I wonder if any of you have had any experience with Colt replacing broken parts at their cost like some other firearms manufacturers will do? Or will they merely blame it on the ammunition and give me a quote to fix at their site? I would appreciate any experienced advice on both subjects.

    Hello the enhanced is just grip safety etc go to " brownell" and get yourself a barrel . however I don't believe your colt barrel was at fault sounds like you had a bullet stuck in the barrel and then shot it again this would cause buldge. What kind of ammo were you shooting ?

    Sounds like you double-tapped a sqib load. I would send it back to Colt. Even if the problem was 'operator induced' there is a very good chance they will cover it. Even if they don't it will probably come back to you in far better shape than when it was new with factory parts done correctly.

    I qualified for the DA of the week award some time back when I installed the recoil spring backwards on my Colt Defender and promptly blew out the reverse plug and generally buggering it up. My fault, but Colt fixed it free and had it returned with a super trigger job within two weeks. I can't fault service like that.

    Thanks for the replies, fellas. Haven't decided whether to ship off to Colt or merely order from Brownells. But I appreciate your advice.

    Same experience with Colt.
    $23 to ship to them, came back with a GREAT trigger job.
    I put 100 rounds through it Sunday, 100%. By far my favorite handgun.

    Hey punchie, you are not the only one that fudged up the ole defender recoil spring. It happened to me after the first time I cleaned it. I didnt send it to Colt though, sent it right to dad. [B)]
