107.95mm projectile
Seeing a sudden interest in large ordnance rounds has prompted me to also ask you experts what it is that I have. First I was born in 1950 and can always remember this round being used for a door stop at my grandfather's house. When he passed away I bought the house for rental property and have had this round in a storage shed for many years.
Now for the specifics.
Weight: 35lbs
Diameter: 4.24" = 107.95mm
Circumference: 13 1/8" = 333.75mm
Length: 9 5/8" = 241.80mm
2 7/16" up from the bottom is what appears to be a brass band that is 13/16" in width. 1/2" from the top is a 45degree taper leaving a nose diameter of 3 1/8". Machining tool marks are evident from top to bottom and their are no grooves to indicate it ever being fired. The only markings are stamped into the top. Two letters not together: F - R #s 183 together & Seperate 7 - 8. Appears to have been originally painted black as the brass band has no paint on it.
Anyone with ideas about this one?

Sound like an AP 105mm like the kind used in a tank.

It sounds like a 105mm AP (armor piercing) projectile with the ballistic cap missing. 0 -

If the diameter of the projectile is 107.95mm, how is it fired from a 105mm Tank Barrel. Is the 105mm just a "Nominal" dimension, i.e. the projectiles can be larger in diameter.0 -
Rufe...I believe that to be exactly the case. It is also my guess by some of the partial nomenclature that this is an Atrillery shell as opposed to a tank round, but without seeing it I cannot be sure!

Sorry guys...I got my topics mixed up! DUH! I think EOD is correct as the black color, bearing and band missing contact head would indicate that this is indeed an AP projectile that came from the M-48 M-60 tank series of main gun. I have a buddy who drove M-48's early in the Viet Nam war; I will ask him if this sounds correct to him.

I was assuming that the measurement might be off a little. It's hard to get an exact diameter without using calipers.0 -
